Parkland Women Headed to Nationals

The Parkland Women’s Basketball team raced out to a 10-2 lead and never looked back as they buried top-seed Illinois Central College 81-54 to win the Region 24 title. The victory send the Cobras to the NJCAA D-2 WBB National Tournament at North Arkansas CC March 21-25. The win avenges an 18 point regular season loss to the Cougars and sends PC to their third trip to Nationals in the last four years.

Layne Buzan got the Cobras off and running as she scored 11 points in the opening quarter as she made three 3’s and a pair of free throws to give PC a 21-8 lead after the first ten minutes. Parkland did not let up as they continued their hot shooting and extended their lead to 42-17 at the break.  Parkland shot 50% in the opening half including 7-14 from behind the arc while ICC was an ice-cold 18% making just 5-28 shots.

The Cobras kept up their defensive intensity as well after the break as they would not let ICC get any closer than 22 points for the rest of the contest.  Parkland shot 52% for the game while ICC finished at 32%. Parkland also made 19 of 25 free throws and out rebounded ICC 35-30.  PC made 10-19 three’s in the contest while ICC connected on just 2-18.  

Karlee Ziliak had one of her best games of the season as she led the way with 18 points on 7-10 shooting. Kerstyn Lowery was steady throughout adding 17 points, 6 assists, and 4 boards while Buzan finished with 14 points and 8 rebounds.  Ryan Dooley came off the bench to add 10 points as well.  ICC was led by Brianna Henson who who finished with 14 points.
