Cobras Win Double Overtime Thriller to Reach Region 24 Title Game

The Parkland Women’s Basketball team rallied from down four with 1:14 left to force overtime and then held on for a wild 70-67 double overtime win over rival Lake Land. The victory moves the Cobras (24-6) into the championship game where they will take on Illinois Central (25-6). The Cougars won a hard fought 70-65 game over Lewis and Clark in the afternoon’s first game. 

The Lakers jumped out to a quick lead on Saturday as they knocked down six 3’s in the opening quarter to take a 21-14 lead.  Both teams struggled to score in the second period but the Cobras did close the gap to just 27-24 at the break.  Lake Land extended their lead to as many as eight in the 3rd quarter at 36-28 with 3:34 left but PC finished the quarter on a 10-2 run to cut the margin to 40-38.

Ryan Dooley’s lay-up with 6:40 to go gave the Cobras their first lead of the second half at 43-42 but PC struggled at the line in the quarter allowing the Lakers to hang with them. Tied at 48, Lake Land would get back to back baskets by Cayla Yates to give the Lakers a 52-48 lead.  Lowery hit a runner with 1:02 to go and following a LLC turnover, Lowery scored on a drive with 27.2 left and had a chance to put PC ahead but missed the free throw. Both teams had a final possession but could not score sending the game to overtime.

In the first extra period, neither team would lead by more than two but missed chances in the final minute to pull out the win. The second overtime started quickly as Kyra Washington hit a shot and Lowery drained a three to put PC on top 66-63.   Layne Buzan’s bucket kept the lead at three but Jay’La Davis lay-in made it 68-67 with 1:55 to go.  Lowery was called for a charge with 1:37 left but Lake Land missed a three, Parkland missed a three, and the Lakers turned the ball over before Lowery was fouled with 24.2 left. She again made 1 of 2 free throws to make it 69-67 but Dymond Randle was fouled with 10.5 left on the clock. She missed both free throw attempts and Heather DeLuca was fouled with 9.1.  After missing the first, she sank the second  to push the lead to three and a Lake Land three fell short at the buzzer as PC secured the win.

Lowery led PC with 21 points as she made 7-16 from the field but struggled at the line making just 4-10.  Layne Buzan added 19 points and 8 boards. Payton Bieber and Heather DeLuca both had 8 while Kyra Washington had 8 rebounds.  PC shot 45% from the field but made just 13-22 at the line.  Lake Land’s Randle paced a balanced attack as she had a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.  Davis and Yates finished with 12 while Kassidy Bonebrake had 10.   After making the six three’s in  the opening quarter, the Lakers missed their final 16 shots behind the arc, including the final shot of the ball game.
