Cobras Blank Lincoln Land to Advance at Region 24

May 20th, 2018

Parkland pitchers Sean Ferguson and Colton Thompson combined to shutout Lincoln Land on just two hits, as they helped keep the Cobras alive with an 8-0 win in the Region 24 Tournament. Ferguson, who was starting his first game of the year after 10 relief appearances, worked 5.1 innings allowing just two hits while striking out three. Thompson dominated the final 3.2 innings as he did not allow a hit while striking out seven to earn his 2nd save of the season.  In addition to the outstanding pitching, Cobra second baseman Trystin Raikes crushed a three run home run in the top of the 9th to break the school career home run record. Raikes now has a total of 31, breaking the tie at 30 with former Cobra and current Major Leaguer Kevin Kiermaier

PC got on the board quickly in the top of the 1st as Trevor Minder and Connor Aube both singled with one out. Raikes followed with an RBI single to make it 1-0 and Tyler Paulsen drove in the second run on a fielder's choice. In the 3rd, Minder would once again single and he raced home on Paulsen's double. Minder was in the mix again in the 7th as he got his third hit of the game and scored on an Aube single.

Up 4-0 in the 8th, Damian Pierce would walk and later score on a Logger error.  Minder would walk and Aube single in the 9th before Raikes delivered his record breaking blast.  Minder set the table for the Cobras as he was 3-3 and scored 4 runs. Raikes had two hits and 4 RBI, Pierce had three hits, and Paulsen drove in a pair.

Parkland (45-14-1) will return to action on Sunday at 1:00 when they will face Danville at the Corn Crib in Normal. PC hopes to get revenge on the Jaguars who handed PC a 3-2 defeat on Friday night. DACC dropped into the loser's bracket with a 9-3 loss today against Heartland.  The winner of the Cobras-Jaguars game will face the Hawks at 4:00. A Heartland win would send them to the World Series while a win by either PC or DACC, would force a Monday championship game.
