Cobra Women Take Regional Title

November 5th, 2016

A day after the Parkland Men’s Soccer team earned their first Region 24 title, Sunday it was the Women’s turn and they defeated Lewis and Clark by the identical score of 3-0.  The #13 ranked Cobras (16-1) will host Missouri winner St. Charles CC (9-4-4) at 12:00 on Saturday November 5th with a trip to Nationals in Melbourne, Florida, on the line. The two teams met earlier this season with the Cobras coming away with a 2-1 win in overtime.

The Blazers controlled the tempo for most of the first half but it would be Cobras who would strike first as Marissa Barria drilled home a goal with just 45 seconds left in the first half to give PC a 1-0 lead at the break. PC was much the aggressor in the second half and Champaign’s Hannah Martinez header off a perfect corner kick from Alyssa Jones pushed the lead to 2-0 with 31:05 remaining in the game.  PC would score their final goal of the afternoon as Brittany Kohnson converted on a penalty kick after Jones was knocked down in the box with only 8:02 remaining.  The Cobras also got strong defensive play from goalie Jenna Ashley who turned back 9 Blazer shots on goals in recording the shutout.

After the match, Parkland’s Ellie McKenzie was named Player of the Year, Jenna Ashley was named Keeper of the Year, and Chris Jackson was Region 24 Coach of the Year. Joining McKenzie and Ashley on the All-Region team were Alyssa Jones, Michaela Ward, and Shone Tremblett.
