Parkland Wins First Even Region 24 Soccer Title

October 29th, 2016

Johnny Pugh scored twice in the first half and Matt Sharman was outstanding in goal, to help the #4 Parkland Men’s Soccer team to a 3-0 over defending Region 24 champion Lewis and Clark, earning the Cobras their first ever Region 24 title. The Cobras (20-1) will host the Central District Championship game next Saturday agains the winner of today’s Missouri championship between #7 St. Louis (17-0-2) and #23 Crowder (16-3).  The winner of that game will advance to the NJCAA D-1 Men’s Soccer Finals in Tyler, Texas.

Lewis and Clark controlled the game early and missed on a couple of golden opportunities over the first 20 minutes but failed to convert.  Meanwhile the Cobras were unable to get much going until Pugh calmly dribbled by a defender and knocked the ball past the Blazer goalie for a 1-0 lead.  Less than ten minutes later it was Pugh again as he found a cap in front of a crowd in front of the goal to give PC the two goal lead. The two shots were the Cobras only two shots on goal in the entire half.

Once again Lewis and Clark had several chances during the second half but this time it was Sharman who came away with several outstanding plays in goal to keep Lewis and Clark off the board. Jeremie Mafumba picked up a loose ball and scored his first goal of the season to give PC a 3-0 lead and some breathing room over the final 18 minutes. Parkland was actually the aggressor as the game wound down and held on for the impressive victory.

After the game, Parkland Coach Mark Sikora was named Region 24 Men’s Coach of the Year, Matt Sharman was named Keeper of the Year and was a 1st Team All-Region selection as was Johnny Pugh.

Parkland Advances to Region 24 Final

October 27th, 2016

Brittany Johnson scored early and Ellie McKenzie scored the Cobras final three goals to lead the #13 ranked and top-seeded Parkland Women’s Soccer team to a 4-0 victory over Kaskaskia, in a Region 24 semi-final. The win moves the Cobras (15-1) into the Region 24 Championship game on Sunday when they will host #14 Lewis and Clark (16-1-1). Lewis and Clark beat SWIC 3-1 in the other semi-final.  PC handed the Blazers their only loss of the season back on September 24 but L&C has won nine straight since that defeat. The two arch rivals met in last year’s Region 24 title game and Lewis and Clark came away with a 1-0 victory.

After a scoreless first twenty minutes which saw the Cobras fail to convert a penalty kick, PC finally got on the board when Brittany Johnson found the back of the net off an assist from Anna McHatton.  It looked like the Cobras would take that 1-0 lead into the break but McKenzie connected on two goals in a 90 second span to push the lead to 3-0 at the half. Shante Tremblett and Shania Maddux both earned the assists as they helped set up McKenzie for the two goals.

McKenzie battled past a couple of defenders to pick up her third goal of the afternoon with about 10 minutes remaining,  as Johnson picked up the assist. McKenzie, who is third in the NCJAA in goals scored and points, now has 34 goals on the season. Cobra keeper Jenna Ashley wasn’t tested often as PC outshot 23-2 on the afternoon including 14-1 on goal.   The shutout was Ashley’s and the Cobras 12th of the season.
