Parkland Run Rules John Wood to take Weekend Series

April 17th, 2016

Game 2:

Parkland made sure they would not fall victim to another John Wood upset as the Cobras scored six times in the first to grab a quick 6-0 lead. The first six batters all reached based and three came home on a towering blast by Megan Tool. John Wood came back with two runs off the Cobras in the 2nd but PC would tack on four in the 3rd as Megan Magsamen crushed a grand slam homer. John Wood scored an unearned run in the 4th to make it 10-3 but PC scored twice in the bottom of the inning as Monica Monroe drove in a pair with a single. Winning pitcher Erin Walker worked a 1-2-3 5th  to earn her second win in as many days over the Blazers as the game ended by the run rule. Walker improved to (12-3) allowing just two earned runs on five hits. She did not walk a batter for the second straight day.   Ginger capped an outstanding day as she went 2-3 with three runs scored. The Cobra lead-off hitter finished the day 5-7 with six runs scored and four RBI.  Hannah Pruden went 3-4 as she finished the afternoon 6-7 with 2 RBI.  Magsamen, Catlin, and Tool all had two hits in the game as PC had 13 total in the contest.

Cobra Fall to John Wood in Slugfest

April 17th, 2016

Game 1:

The Blazers cracked four home runs  but had to hang on late for the one run win.  PC broke on top in the first as Haley Ginger homered to give PC the early 1-0 lead.  John Wood answered back with four runs in the second and PC would get one of those back In the bottom of the inning on a Monica Monroe RBI single.  PC had a chance for a bigger inning but left the bags loaded.  John Wood would add three more runs in the 3rd as  Haleigh Hammel and Lindsey VanTress hit back to back home runs.  Taylor Jordan’s sacrifice fly in the 3rd cut the lead to 7-3 but PC left two more runners on base.

John Wood would push their lead to 10-5 in the 5th as Van Tress and Hanna Runner both homered for the Blazers setting up the Cobras comeback effort.  PC scored four times in the fifth with three coming on Ginger’s second home run of the game.  PC had runners at first and second with two outs but a ground out to 3rd ended the threat. After Sophi Catlin shut down JW in the top of the 6th, PC would threaten in the bottom of the inning, again putting runners at 1st and 2nd but the Cobras lone strike out of the game ended the inning.  John Wood failed to score in the top of the 7th and again Parkland would try and rally. Catlin started the inning with a line drive off the fence in right that just missed being a game tying home run.  After a sacrifice bunt, Megan Tool lined out to the short stop who had the ball bounce off her glove and she recovered to catch the ball just before it hit the ground.  Katie Kuska popped out to shallow left to end the ball game. The Cobras banged out 15 hits but left 13 runners on base. Ginger was 3-4 with 4 RBI, while Hannah Pruden was 3-4, and Tool and Jordan each had two hits.

Heartland Avoids Sweep With Extra Inning Win

April 17th, 2016

Game 2:

Nick Stokowski got the Cobras on the board in the 1st with a solo blast to right and after HCC tied the game in the 2nd, PC would add an unearned run in the bottom of the frame and Chris Whelan would score on a Muffley single in the 3rd to give PC a 3-1 lead.  That lead would stay in place until the 6th when Heartland would score twice to tie the game off PC starter Ryan Fox. Meanwhile HCC starter Tyler Hasper was mowing down the PC line-up after allowing three runs over the first three innings as he shut down the Parkland hitters to force extra innings. Neither team scored in the first extra inning but HCC took advantage of a costly error in the 9th inning to take the lead and earn the win.  With two outs and nobody on base, the Hawks reached on an error and followed that with an RBI single. Matt Bainbridge followed with an RBI single of his own and the Hawks scored another unearned run to take a 5-3 lead.  The Cobras would get the tying run on base in their half of the 9th but Hasper ended the threat to earn the complete game win. Failoni was the tough luck loser as he was outstanding in relied going 3.3 innings allowing no earned run on two hits, walking one and striking out five.

Catlin Long Ball Propels Cobra Comeback

April 14th, 2016

After going 2-3 with a two-run home run in an 8-4 Cobra loss in the opener, game two did not start well for Parkland's Sophi Catlin. The Monticello freshman struck out in each of her first two at bats, stranding a runner in the first and two more in the third.  When Catlin stepped to the plate in the 5th, PC trailed 5-1 and it appeared the #16 Cobras were on their way to being swept by #9 Kankakee. Catlin connected on a solo home run to cut the Cavalier lead to three, but it was her at bat in the 6th that deserved the curtain call.

Down 5-2, PC put two runners on with one out and tied the game as Haley Ginger, Monica Monroe, and Megan Magsamen all delivered run scoring hits. Tied at 5, Catlin roped a three-run homer, her third round tripper of the day, to give the Cobras an 8-5 lead and they hung on for the win and a split for the day and in the four game season series.

Jaclyn Thompson (12-3) earned the win despite allowing five runs on ten hits. Thompson however was at her best over the final two innings as she got out of a jam in the 6th and retired KCC in order in the 7th to pick up the win.  Catlin was 2-4 with two runs scored and four RBI while Magsamen added three hits and Monroe and Katie Kuska each had two.

PC scored three times in the 5th as Megan Magsamen doubled in Haley Ginger and Catlin hit her first home run of the day, a two-run blast to make it 8-4.  PC would threaten in both the 6th and 7th innings but could get no closer.  Morgan Harper was a bright spot in relief as she worked 5.2 innings and did not allow a run.  Megan Tool along with Magsamen and Ginger all has two hits in the game.

Golden Eagles Finish Off Sweep of Cobras

April 14th, 2016

Game 2:

Unfortunately for the Cobras it was more of the same in game two as Rock Valley jumped out early and cruised to the sweep.  The Eagles got things started with a lead-off single, followed by a two-run home run to grab an early 2-0 lead off PC starter Morgan Harper. Harper would settle down after that and blank RVCC on just two hits over the next four innings. Rock Valley's hurler was in complete control from the start as she retired the first nine hitters of the game before Ginger lead off the 4th with a single. PC would get two runners on base in both the 4th and 5th innings but could not get on the board. The Eagles added two more runs in the 6th to make it 4-0 before PC's Sophi Caitlin hit a solo home run in the bottom of the frame.  Rock Valley would score two more in the 7th and the Cobras would go quietly in the last half of the inning as Rock Valley swept PC for the second straight year.

Cobras Drop Game One to DIII #1 Rock Valley

April 14th, 2016

Game 1:

The Eagles jumped on top in the 2nd as the RVCC #9 hitter stroked a double into the gap with two outs to score a pair of runs.  Rock Valley added a couple more runs in the 6th before PC finally got on the board in the bottom of the inning. Elise Stewart and Haley Ginger started things off with back to back singles but the next two PC hitters both flew out. Parkland starting pitcher Sophi Catlin helped her own cause with an RBI single but Hannah Pruden grounded back to the pitcher to end the inning.  After the Eagles added an insurance run in the 7th, PC would score a run of their own as Makena Butcher crushed a ball over the center field fence. Stewart just missed a home run of her own as she doubled off the fence but Ginger grounded out to short to end the ball game.
