Parkland Holds on Late to Defeat Kankakee

January 17th, 2016

Grant Gibson drilled a three-pointer with 27.3 seconds left, to help carry the Cobras to a 66-63 win over visiting Kankakee on Saturday afternoon at the Dodds Athletic complex. Gibson had a game high 23 points as the Cobras picked up the win over their D-1 rival.

The two teams got off to a slow start with neither team making a bucket for the first 4:30 of the game until Gibson hit his first of four three’s on the afternoon. The Cobras extended their lead to 15-8 with 9:45 left in the half but a 10-0 Cavalier run gave KCC an 18-15 lead with 6:44 to play. PC cut the margin to 25-24 but the Cavs scored the final five points and took a 30-24 lead into intermission.

A three-point play to start the second half gave Kankakee their biggest lead of the game at nine but the Cobras roared back, eventually tying the game at 37. PC then went on a nice run, building their own nine point lead at 47-38 with 14:00 to go. It was time for another KCC run, as they scored seven straight points to cut the lead to 47-45 before PC scored six straight to give the Cobras a 53-45 with 9:11 remaining.

The Cavaliers followed with an 8-0 run to tie the game at 53-53 with 6:57 left and neither team would lead by more than three for the remainder of the contest. Tied at 58, KCC made 1 of 2 at the line to grab a 59-58 lead with 2:42 to go but Austin Howard hit his only basket of the game with 2:16 left to give PC a one point lead. Kevin Daniels hit a pair of free throws to put KCC back on top. Both teams missed chances and Quadre Lollis had a chance to give PC the lead again, but missed both free throws. Fortunately the missed shot was knocked out of bounds giving the Cobras another chance and Lollis redeemed himself with a rebound bucket with 48.4 to go. Daniels five-footer put the Cavs back in front with 41.2 left before Gibson hit the eventual game winner. KCC missed a shot and Joe Larry made 1-2 free throws to give PC a 66-63 with 12.2 left and Daniels three-pointer was off the mark as the Cobras hung on for the win.

Gibson led PC with 23 points while Cornelius McIntosh added 12. Larry added 9 points, Jessy Cantinol had 6 points and 8 boards, while Luke Beesley chased down 10 rebounds. Daizon Scott led KCC with 23 points. PC won despite shooting just 38% from the field and 39% from the line (9-23).
