Scoring Spree Propels Cobras to Win

October 17th, 2015

The Parkland Men’s Soccer team scored five unanswered goals in a span of 13 minutes in the second half as they pulled away for an impressive 7-2 win over visiting South Suburban.

The Cobras got off to a good start as Brennen Crose converted 13 minutes into the match off a Salar Samimi pass. Aidan Reilly set up Daniel Kadima for the Cobras second goal at the 25 minute mark to make it 2-0. So. Suburban had several chances early but hit the cross bar twice and Cobras goalie Matt Sharman had a pair of outstanding saves. The Bulldogs finally got on the board as they cut the lead in half with a goal with just under 10 minutes left in the half.

Down 2-1 after the break, SSCC took little time to tie the match as they evened things up with a goal just seven minutes into the second half following a defensive breakdown by PC. From that point on it was all Cobras as Kadima slotted home his second goal of the afternoon after a pass from Feli Keti. Less than a minute later, Gustavo Giordani scored with Kadima earning the assist. Up 4-2, PC kept up the attack as Daniel Musasa threaded the ball though the Bulldog back line and Kadima calmly poked the ball pass the keeper for the hat trick. Alex Zarco scored the game’s most impressive goal in the 64th minute as he intercepted a ball and hit a volley from 25 yards out that flew by the goalie into the top corner of the net. Kadima added his second assist to go along with his three goals as Samimi’s header gave PC their final 7-2 margin.

Parkland improves to (9-5-2) and will wrap up the regular season on Sunday with a 2:00 match against the UI Club Team on International Student Day at the pitch. So.Suburban falls to (9-5-1) with the loss.

Cobras Clinch M-WAC with Comeback Win

October 14th, 2015

The Parkland College Men's Soccer team roared back from a 3-0 deficit on Wednesday as they rallied for a 4-3 win over visiting Lincoln Land, earning the Cobras an outright M-WAC title. The Cobras started slowly for the second consecutive match, falling behind the Loggers 3-0 after 28 minutes of the contest. From that point the Cobras caught fire and came back for the impressive win.

Down by three, Gustavo Giordani got PC back into the game as she scored off a nice pass from Alex Zarco.  Just five minutes later, Daniel Kadima scored a spectacular volley off an equally impressive cross from Dom Crawford.  With just over two minutes left in the half,  Feli Keti tied the match off a corner kick from Daniel Kadima.

The Cobras controlled the second half and had numerous chances to grab the lead but it took until the final 10 minutes for PC to finally get their first lead.  Giordani hit a clean strike off an assist from Kadima for the game winner and a conference title.

The Cobras have two more regular season games left as they will host South Suburban at Noon on Saturday and the UI Club Team at 2:00 on Sunday.  Ironically, the Cobras (8-5-2) earned the #3 seed in the upcoming Region 24 Tournament and will play Lincoln Land (4-9) in their first game. Game time is set for Saturday October 24 at Noon.

#5 Iowa Western Shoots Past #7 Parkland

October 9th, 2015

In a battle of top ten teams, the Cobras would get on the board early only to see Iowa Western take over from there.  Ellie McKenzie would give Parkland the lead as she would hit a deep shot just three minutes into the match.  Iowa Western would answer back with two goals of their own, both off the foot of Maria Martinez.  Kennedy Cascio would add one more goal in the second half for the Reivers to make the 3-1 final.  #7 Parkland falls to (10-2-1) on the year.

Cobras Take Down Region 24 Foe ICC

October 6th, 2015

The #1 Cobras faced off with #18 ranked and perennial power Illinois Central College this evening at home and swept the Cougars 25-18, 25-16, 25-22.

A trio of Cobras led the offense with Laura Gross (10 kills), Hayley Gray (8 kills) and Lizzy Barnard (7 kills) combining for 25 of the PC offense. Sofi Kelemete had a great blocking night with 9 blocks, and setters Jaime Johnson and Kell Lean combined for 36 assists on the night. Barnard, Miaya Peacock and Madison Harpest did an excellent job all night on serve receive and defense. And setter Courtney Moritz came in the game at 21-21 to find a kill and wrap up the win.

The Cobras improve to 36-0 overall ahead of the final long road trip of the season to Des Moines, Iowa for four matches including two top 15 match-ups against #13 Kirkwood (IA) and the hosts #4 DMACC.

Late Goal From Olivet Takes Down Parkland

October 4th, 2015

The Parkland Men’s Soccer team failed to take advantage of numerous missed opportunities on Saturday as they dropped a 3-2 decision to the Olivet Nazarene JV. The Cobras outshot the Tigers 17-5 on the afternoon but several missed chances  doomed PC’s chance at a tie or win.

Playing without four regulars on Saturday for a variety of reasons, PC fell behind early as the Tigers converted on a penalty kick to make it 1-0.  Daniel Kadima had two excellent scoring chances but both balls hit hard off the cross bar and PC could not convert. Kadima finally did connect midway thru the opening half to tie the match, which is where it stood at halftime.

Taking advantage of the wind, Olivet grabbed the lead once again midway thru the half off of a header from a perfectly executed corner kick.   The lead wouldn’t last long though as Aidan Reilly calmly booted the ball into the upper left corner with just 19 minutes remaining to tie the match at two.   Unfortunately for PC, ONU would take the ball from end to end and slotted the ball perfectly into the corner to regain the lead with under 10 minutes to go.  It looked like PC would tie the match again but Feli Keti was denied on a great save by the Tiger goalie and his rebound shot sailed just wide of the post with only 7:30 left in the match.   PC would control the ball over the final five minutes but could not create another strong scoring opportunity.

Parkland falls to (7-4-2) while ONU JV improve to (7-1).  The Cobras will be off until next Saturday when they will travel to East Peoria to take on ICC at 2:00, in a key M-WAC and Region 24 showdown.

Parkland Scores Late to Take Down SWIC

October 1st, 2015

For over 70 minutes, Parkland and Southwestern Illinois battled to a scoreless tie but a late surge over the final 18 minutes gave the #8 Cobras an important 3-0 Region 24 win over the Blue Storm on a cool and windy afternoon in Champaign.  The first half was a back and forth affair with SWIC getting five shots on goal to four for Parkland.

The second half was a different story as Parkland had the wind in their favor and took advantage of the conditions controlling play for most of the half.  The Cobras finally broke the tie as Shante Tremblett calmly kicked the ball past the Blue Storm goalie off a feed from Alyssa Jones with 18:02 left. Parkland kept up the pressure and just 8 minutes later, Catherine McHale blasted a ball into the top corner of the net from 20 yards out to give PC a 2-0 lead. Jones earned the assist again, her second of the afternoon. Two minutes later PC wrapped up the scoring as once again Tremblett would score off a Kaljit Atwal assist.  The Cobras ended the day with ten shots on goal to seven for SWIC. Cobra goalie Jenna Ashley had 6 saves on the afternoon as she recorded her 5th consecutive shutout and 9th of the season.

Parkland (9-1-1 and 3-0-1 in Region play) will be off until Wednesday October 7 when they travel to East Peoria to take on ICC.  A win would wrap up the Cobras second consecutive M-WAC title.  SWIC (7-4 1-2) will play ICC at home this Saturday in Belleville.

Cobras Stay Atop M-WAC Taking Down Lincoln

October 1st, 2015

The Parkland College Men's Soccer team played maybe their most complete match of the year on Wednesday as they routed visiting Lincoln College 7-1. The victory was the second this season for Parkland over Lincoln as the Cobras won 5-4 in overtime at Lincoln earlier this fall.  The win keeps the Cobras on top of the M-WAC standings with a one game lead over Illinois Central.

Parkland dominated today's match from the start as Daniel Kadima opened the scoring after a clever pass from Gustavo Giordani.  Dominic Crawford made it 2-0 just four minutes later on a spectacular free kick from 25 yards out.  Feli Keti wrapped up the first half scoring as he scored off another Giordani pass.

The Cobras did not let up in the second half as Jonathan Lukusa scored two quick goals to extend the PC lead to 5-0 as Brennen Crose and Giordani picked up the assists.  Crose then added a goal for himself with Crawford providing the assist.  After a Lynx goal, Giordani added a goal of his own to his three assists, curling a low free kick past the keeper into the edge of the box.

Parkland improves to (7-3-2 5-0-1) on the year while Lincoln drops to (5-3-1 2-3). PC hosts the Olivet Nazarene JV this Saturday at 11 am.
