Cobras Holds on For M-Wac win Over Lincoln Land

September 23rd, 2014
The Parkland Men's soccer team got back to their winning way tonight defeating conference rivals Lincoln Land Community College.
Parkland made a very bright start to the game and answered a lot of questions early, with Gracson Torres coming close after great work down the left side by Zach Allevi. It was Allevi who created the games only goal as he cut into the box and was hacked down for a penalty kick. Andreas Chalbaud stepped up and slotted the ball home. Parkland had several good chances as Jonathon Lukusa and Feli Keti caused problems for the Loggers defense but were unable to find the back of the net.

The second half was a much more even affair with Lincoln Land caming out with some high energy and came close to equalizing but Harry Rook made a fine save. Rook was called into action again late in the second half when a ball was flicked on at the near post at goal, Rook made the first save and was up quickly to make another fantastic save to keep his team in the lead. Parkland had a couple more chances late with Chalbaud and Lukusa coming the the closest.

The win moves PC to (7-2 3-1) ahead of a M-WAC and Region 24 showdown this Saturday with Heartland starting at 1:00 in Champaign.

Parkland Upsets #11 Lewis and Clark in Region 24 Matchup

September 13th, 2014
Two days after an uninspired victory over ICC, the Parkland Women's Soccer team came up with their best effort of the young season as they stunned #11 and previously unbeaten Lewis and Clark 1-0 in Champaign on Saturday. The Blazers entered the contest a perfect 7-0 and had outscored their opponents 60-0 in those seven matches.

On Saturday it was the Cobras who were the aggressive team early and it finally paid off when Ginyce Haywood scored on an assist from Davia Morrison 29 minutes into the match, as PC converted after a pair of missed opportunities near the goal.  The two teams would play evenly for the remainder of the half as the Cobras would take that 1-0 lead into the break.

The first 15 minutes of the second half was all Lewis and Clark as they came out fired up and quickly put up three shots to start the half but could not connect. After holding off the Blazers attack. PC would regain control over the final 30 minutes and just missed on a pair of scoring opportunities by Catherine McHale. L&C goalie Rachel Widdick's save with just under 12 minutes left denied the first shot while McHale's second was just over the top of the goal.

The Blazers would have a couple of opportunities late but the Cobras used a strong defensive effort to hold on for the win.  PC finished with 12 shots on goal to just 8 for the visiting Blazers. The win moves PC to (5-0) while Lewis and Clark drops to (7-1).  Parkland returns to action this Tuesday when they travel to Heartland for an M-WAC contest against the Hawks.

Home Opener Ends in Sweep for #1 Parkland Volleyball

September 10th, 2014

The #1 ranked Parkland Cobras volleyball team finally got a chance to play at home tonight after 14 matches on the road facing conference and region opponent Lewis & Clark CC.

Unlike most opening home matches of a season, the Cobras came out confident and clean versus the Trailblazers taking an early 18-8 first set lead. The Blazers did a nice job fighting towards the end of set 1 to push the Cobra first set win to 25-16. But, Parkland came out with even more intensity in set 2 quickly winning the set 25-8. The third set saw L&C settle into a nice rhythm, forcing Parkland into some unnecessary errors, before PC rallied with a push at the end of the set to prevail in a 3-0 sweep with a score of 25-23 in the third.

All 15 Cobras got significant time tonight. Offensively, PC was led by Alayna Jackson's 8 kills hitting an impressive .636 while Lori VanBeek had 6 kills with an .857 hitting percentage. As a team, the Cobras hit an impressive .410 which was a season high. The trio of setters (Morgan Hickman, Madison Weldon and Kelly Lean) combined for 30 assists in the match while Madison Harpest had 3 aces and Weldon had 2.

Parkland improves to 14-1 overall and now 1-0 in the M-WAC. A special thank you to an amazing crowd in which we celebrated both area high school volleyball programs as well as the Champaign-Urbana Special Recreation Group.  Next up for the Cobras is a pair of matches on Friday and Saturday at the Kankakee Invitational. The Cobras are in the five team field along with Kankakee, Sauk Valley, Ancilla, and Robert Morris.

Men’s Soccer Takes Down Lincoln to Remain Unbeaten

September 9th, 2014
The Parkland Men's Soccer team returned to action on Tuesday afternoon as they faced M-WAC rival Lincoln College.  The Cobras got on the board first as they scored just 9 minutes into the match. Daniel Kadima created space for a shot and the ball fell at the feet of Feli Keti who rounded the keeper and put the ball in from 7 yards away.

The Lynx would answer back quickly as they would score in the 19th minute as they converted off of a cross from a free kick tying the match at 1. PC would then control the rest of the half and the hard work paid off as PC would break the tie with just 8 minutes remaining before intermission.  Zach Allevi won the ball and slipped a perfect pass into the feet of a running Brennen Crose. The Lincoln back line could not catch Crose who knocked the ball over the hands of the rushing goal keeper to give the Cobras the lead.

The second half got under way with a clear change in pace. Both teams fought hard for the ball and did not give each other an inch. Lincoln had a couple of long range shots that were acrobatically saved by Harry Rook. Zach Allevi's hard work earned him a few half chances but it was Feli Keti again who settled it. Keti managed to pick up a sloppy clearance from the Lincoln back line, beat one defender, and hit the ball from just outside the box with only 22 seconds remaining to seal the win.

The win keeps the Cobras undefeated at (6-0 2-0 in the M-WAC) while Lincoln drops to (0-3-1 0-1). Next up for PC will be a Sunday afternoon showdown at Region 24 rival Lewis and Clark.
