Parkland Ends Kick for Hunger Tourney With Win Over Kankakee

The Cobra Men would play in the final match at the 2014 Kick for Hunger tournament at Parkland College and end with a bang as they were able to shutout Kankakee and win 2-0.  Jonathan Lukusa would tally both goals for the Cobras in the first half as they continued to threaten in the second but were unable to put another one in the net.  The defense played well however to pace the win as Parkland improves to (4-0) on the season.

Parkland Women Open Season With Shutout Win

The Parkland College Women would start their season at home as a part of the Kick for Hunger tournament and look impressive coming out with a 3-0 win over Jackson College.  The Cobras would lean heavily on two Freshman as Catherine McHale would score twice in the win, and Kaljit Atwal would pick up a goal as well.

Men’s Soccer Wins Home Debut Over SWIC

The Parkland College Men's Soccer team would take on Region 24 opponent  SWIC in the first home contest of the year for the Cobras.  They wouldn't wait long to get their first goal on the new home field as Manny Rios would start the scoring with an impressive goal, and Gesi Muharremi following soon after with a penalty kick goal to give Parkland a 2-0 lead going into the half.  The Cobras would go on another run where they would net another two goals, one each from Jonathan Lukusa and Andres Chalbaud.  The last two goals would be sandwiched around the lone SWIC tally by Trent Kendrick to make the 4-1 final.  The win puts the Cobras at (2-0) on the year as they prepare for the upcoming Kick Out Hunger Tournament hosted by Parkland College.

#1 Cobras start VB season (4-0) at Wisconsin Dells Invite

The #1 Parkland Cobras volleyball team concluded day 2 of the Wisconsin Dells Invitational with two more victories, pushing their over-all record to 4-0 to start the season. In the first match on Saturday, PC defeated a much improved Mott team from Michigan. Mott had notched a couple of upset wins on day one so the Cobras had to fight hard to sweep them 3-0 by the scores of 25-18, 25-20, and 25-20. Lori VanBeek continued her strong offensive play leading the Cobras with 11 kills with Elise Dahlke and Teigan Flaws contributing 6 each. Setters Madison Weldon and Morgan Hickman ran the offense and provided 15 and 14 assists, respectively. Sophomore libero, Kaitlin Hunt had 20 digs for the Cobras and Weldon and Miaya Peacock each had 2 aces.
In match two, the Cobras faced #13 Muskegon of Michigan. All 15 players for Parkland helped push the Cobras to a 3-1 victory with scores of 25-13, 25-21, 25-27, 25-18. Vanbeek had 16 kills while Flaws and Lizzy Barnard pounded 9 each. Setters Weldon and Hickman ran the offense with 26 and 21 assists, respectively. Hunt once again led the defensive effort with 23 digs. Peacock again performed well at the service line with 5 aces.
The Cobras next travel to Toledo, Ohio for the Owens Labor Day Invitational from August 29-31. PC will p[ay six times over the three days including matches against #6 Oakland, #10 Grand Rapids, #18 Catawba Valley as well as perennial power Monroe College of NY.

Parkland Volleyball team ranked #1 in the NJCAA Pre-Season Poll

The Parkland College Volleyball team will open the 2014 season with the #1 ranking in the NJCAA D-2 Volleyball Poll after it was released today. The Cobras, who finished 2nd in 2013, open their season this Friday and Saturday at the South Suburban Classic in the Wisconsin Dells. PC will face Carl Sandburg and #12 Kansas City KS Community College on Friday before facing off against a pair of Michigan schools, Mott and #13 Muskegon on Saturday.
As always, the Cobras will be tested early as they face nine other teams ranked in the top 20 during the first three weeks of the season. After seeing two ranked squads in Wisconsin, PC will play three of six matches at the Owens Invitational against ranked foes (#6 Oakland, #10 Grand Rapids, and #18 Catawba Valley). The Kirkwood Invitational, a week later, is loaded with talent as PC will take on defending National Champion and #2 Cowley, #3 Johnson County, #5 Central Nebraska, and #7 Iowa Central.
Parkland is scheduled to go up against 13 of the top 20 teams at some point in time during the upcoming season. The Cobras will play their first three tournaments and 14 matches on the road before playing for the first time at home on September 10 against M-WAC rival Lewis and Clark.
