Men’s Soccer Season Comes to End on Penalty Kicks

October 30th, 2013

The Parkland Men's soccer team battled to the very end but saw their successful season come to a disappointing end as they fell 3-1 on penalty kicks to rival Lewis & Clark in the Region 24 semi-finals.  The Blazers, who had defeated PC 4-1 earlier this season, jumped out on top early in the first half to grab a 1-0 lead. It appeared that would be the score going into the half  but the Cobras answered back with two goals in the final six minutes of the opening half. Eddie Lubaga scored with just 5:54 left in the half as he connected on a feed from Andres Chalbaud to tie the match. Just three minutes later, Chalbaud again earned the assist as Zach Allevi scored to give PC the lead 2-1 at the break.

Unfortunately for the Cobras, that lead was short lived as the Blazers tied the match just 3 minutes into the second half. The remaining 42 minutes of the half was a back and forth affair with very few scoring opportunities for either team. The lone big scoring opportunity came with just 15 seconds left in regulation but Cobra goalie Harrison Rook made an outstanding save to send the game to overtime.

With the rain coming down harder and the winds increasing, neither team was able to mount many chances in either of the two ten-minute overtime periods, so after 110 minutes the game remained tied and headed to penalty kicks.

PC shot first, in the five man penalty kick sequence, and Andres Chalbaud found the back of the net only to see the Blazers answer back. Both teams failed to connect on their second attempts and from their, Region 24's top goalkeeper Lewis and Clark's Jack Filla stopped the next two PC attempts while the Blazers were able to score on both of their shots for the 3-1 margin.

Lewis and Clark (12-5-3) will now move on to host the Region 24 Championship game on Saturday at Noon against Lincoln College (12-4-1). The #4 seed Lynx stunned top-seed Lincoln Land 5-3 in the other semi-final.  Parkland has their season come to an end with a final record of (11-2-4).

Ginyce Haywood ripped a shot past the Cougar goalie from 20 yards out to get PC on the board 13 minutes into the match.  Haywood took the pass from Leticia Rabello as PC grabbed the early 1-0 lead. The remainder of the half was an even match as St. Charles and Parkland each had 7 shots.
The second half was more to the Cobras liking as they completely controlled the tempo allowing just one Cougar shot. PC would connect on one of their seven shots after the break as Maddie Martin scored off a corner kick from fellow Hoosier Ali Host.  Leading 2-0, PC cruised to the victory as Meaghan McLelland recorded a shutout in goal as she played in place of the regular starting goalie Beatriz Gomes who was out with an injury.

Parkland Dominates SWIC in Shutout Win

October 2nd, 2013
The Women's Soccer team scored four times in the opening 15 minutes as they went on to rout visiting Southwestern Illinois College 13-0.  The win comes on the heels of a 12-1 pounding of Prairie State just two nights ago. Like Monday night, balance was once again the key as 9 different Cobras scored in the opening half and 11 players scored in the match.  Ginyce Haywood scored twice and had two assists, Ali Host added pair of goals, and Marissa Espinoza had a goal and two assists for the victorious Cobras.
Two days after struggling to score in the opening half of their match, Wednesday's game was completely different as the Cobras scored 9 times in the first 45 minutes and out shot their opponents 19-1.  The Cobras would substitute throughout the match as Lynette Ramsey and Giovanna Zanchetta would both score their first goals of the season in the second half as PC out shot the Blue Storm 35-3 on the afternoon.
Parkland (8-3 3-1) now heads north to Michigan for a weekend series with Schoolcraft and Jackson. Schoolcraft is ranked #11 in the latest NJCAA poll but suffered their first defeat of the season today, a 2-1 2 ot loss to Owens.  Jackson is (6-4) on the year and has won three straight ahead of a game with Kellogg prior to playing the Cobras.  SWIC falls to (3-8 1-3) with the defeat.
