Parkland Golfer David Keenan Wins NJCAA National Championship!

May 31st, 2013

Parkland College sophomore David Keenan fired a one-under par 71 on Friday and finished at -8 for the week, good enough to win the individual title at the NJCAA D-2 National Golf Tournament at Goose Pond Colony in Scottsboro, Alabama. Keenan won by a convincing 5 strokes over a group of four players who all finished tied at -3. The Salt Fork graduate led for the first 36 holes of the tournament but found himself trailing by a stroke after Thursday's round. Keenan's 71 on Friday was one on only seven scores under par on the cool, breezy day which saw 3rd round leader Steven Souchek struggle to an 81, just a day after firing a 66 to take the lead. Keenan's medalist title is the first for Parkland in golf and earns him All-American honors. It is the Cobras highest finish since Michael Davan earned All-American honors in 2009 with a 9th place finish. Cobra teammate Lyle Burns concluded a solid week of golf with a 75 on Friday to put him in a tie for 52nd place out of 122 golfers who were entered in the finals. Fellow Region 24 entries Jake Schneider (ICC) 11th, Steve Souchek (Logan) 12th and Rend Lake's Dayton Jones (19th), all finished in the top 20.

"Winning the individual title exceeds my wildest expectations," said Keenan. "I played well this year but for some reason struggled in the opening rounds of several tournaments. I knew after the 66 on Tuesday and the 70 on Wednesday that I had put myself in a position to win the title.  I want to thank my family, coaches, and teammates for their support, it's an amazing feeling to be Parkland's first National Champion in golf."

South Mountain College placed four players in the top 10 and ran away with the team title, out scoring 2nd place Walters State and 3rd Place John A Logan by a collective 19 and 31 strokes respectively

Mike Lindeman Named New Head Coach of Women’s Basketball

May 31st, 2013

The Parkland College Athletic Department is pleased to announce that Mike Lindemann has been named the new Women's Basketball Coach. Lindemann served as an assistant coach to former head coach Karrie Redeker before her departure for Illinois Central College in April. Prior to coming to Parkland, Lindemann was the head coach at Champaign Central High school for 6 years where he compiled a record of (90-57).  He also was the varsity boys coach at University High School for 3 years and coached AAU basketball for four years. Mike is currently the Co-Owner of Body 'n Soul Sports and is the Co-Director of the Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon,  He and his wife Liz have 3 daughters, Laura, Allie, and Rachel.

Lindemann has also selected his two assistants. Former Monticello and Salt Fork Head Coach David Ellars will serve as the Associate Head Coach. Ellars will handle many of the administrative duties and will coordinate summer camps as well as the junior and senior high school summer leagues hosted at Parkland. Current assistant Bill Dobrik will also remain on the staff after serving as an assistant the previous two seasons. Dobrik will be the Cobra Recruiting Coordinator as well as assisting with practices and scouting.

"I am extremely pleased to have Mike as the new Head Coach of the Cobras", said Cobra Athletic Director Rod Lovett. "He has incredible knowledge of the game, is highly respected by his players and peers, and will do an excellent job developing players at Parkland. We pinpointed Mike early on as a potential replacement, but with his busy schedule at Body 'n Sole and with his responsibilities with the Illinois Marathon, it was important for us to get a staff in place to assist him with the job. Retaining Coach Dobrik and adding Coach Ellars was essential in making this work. Losing Karrie was a momentary setback, but I feel getting Mike to replace her will allow us to continue the success the Cobra Women's Basketball program has achieved for the past several years."
