Parkland Women Pick Up Big Road Win at Ranked Foe

November 28th, 2012

Stellar free throw shooting and solid bench play helped the Parkland Women's basketball team upset #7 ranked Illinois Valley 81-75 in Oglesby on Tuesday night. The Cobras, led by Lindsay Lenon's 20 points, nailed 22 of 23 free throws on the evening, and outscored Illinois Valley's bench 30-12 to help secure the win.

The first half was a see-saw affair, as both teams came out scoring quickly. PC held a narrow 11-10 lead on a three pointer by Lenon at the 15:00 mark, and the two teams were knotted at 18-all with just under 10 minutes to play in the opening half.  PC took a narrow 34-32 lead into the break.

The second half was more of the same, as the score was knotted 44-all at the 14 minute mark. PC then went on 12-1 run, sparked by freshman point guard Aimee Iverson's hustling defensive plays. Her pass to Uzuri Williams for a lay up gave the Cobras their biggest lead at 56-45 lead with 11:00 remaining.

IVCC did not back down as they then went on a 21-6 run of their own to take a 66-62 lead. It was time for the Cobras to respond as Parkland fired back with a 17-2 run, powered by six different players scoring to give PC that 11 point margin again at 79-68 with just under two minutes remaining. Lexie Taylor and Lenon finished the game with free throws to close out the victory.

All the Cobras had a hand in the victory, with Lenon a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line to earn her a game high 20 points. Williams turned in her best effort of the season with 11 points, 7 boards, and 4 steals. Lexie Taylor had 10 points and a career high 7 assists. Erin Kelley and Taylor Redeker had 8 points apiece, while Ebany Brumfield had 6 boards and 4 points and Iverson dished out 4 assists. PC shared the ball nicely as they had a season high 20 assists which led to 28 baskets.

The #20 ranked Cobras, now 7-1, come back home for a pair of home games this weekend as they host the Millikin JV on Saturday at 2:00 pm and then the Elmhurst JV on Sunday at 1:00 pm.

Men’s Basketball Blitzes Prairie State

November 20th, 2012

The Parkland Men came up big on Tuesday night as they drilled previously unbeaten and #21 Prairie State 74-42. Both teams were missing starters due to injuries but it was the Cobras who overcame their adversity with a balanced attack and a deep bench. PC's bench outscored the Pioneers 41-0 for the contest.

The Cobras shot 47% on the evening and converted 17-20 free throw attempts while committing just 13 turnovers and forcing 24. Ten players made it into the scorebook with Cedric Smith leading the way with 13 points and 8 rebounds.  Lance Magee added 12 points and 3 steals while the Cobras also received strong performances from Phil Miller who had 9 points, 4 assists, and 4 steals and Ian Randolph with 6 points and 4 boards.  Joe Hughes lead all scorers with 17 points.

Parkland improves to (5-2) on the season and will take the weekend off before getting back to practice on Sunday. They will be off until November 29 when they travel to Decatur to take on the Millikin University JV. Pr. State drops to (4-1) with the loss.

Parkland Women Head to Break With Big Home Win

November 20th, 2012

Lindsay Lenon scored 15 of her game high 20 points in the second half to help lead the Parkland Women's Basketball team to a convincing 71-49 rout of Prairie State. The Cobras entered the contest ranked #20 while the visiting Pioneers were one spot above at #19. On this night, it would be all Cobras however, as PC ran out to a 9-0 lead and were never really challenged.

PC built a 31-13 lead in the first half but the Pioneers would chip away and cut the margin to nine at 36-27 at the break.  The game would stay in that 8-12 point range for much of the early part of the second half before Lenon and Jocie Klocke would take over and put the game away.  Lenon finished 8-16 from the field for her 20 points and Klocke knocked down 5 of 7 to finish with 14. Erin Kelley was the only other player in double figures with 10.  Just missing double digits was Uzuri Williams who had 9 points and 5 rebounds and Lexi Taylor who played an outstanding over-all game with 8 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. She may have been her best on the defensive end where she helped harass the Pioneers into 31 turnovers on the night.

Parkland improves to (6-1) on the year and will be off until next Tuesday when they travel to Illinois Valley CC.  The Pioneers fall to (3-2) with the loss.

The Cobras grabbed an early 2-0 lead, winning the first two sets 27-25 and 25-20 only to see Grand Rapids win the next two 25-21 and 25-17 to force the 5th and deciding game. In the championship match, the Cobras swept the Loggers of Lincoln Land in a hard fought contest. In set 1, PC found themselves down 20-17 before outscoring the guests 8-1 to close out the win. Basketball Kicks Off With Close Loss for Men

November 1st, 2012
Daryll Walker's steal and lay-up with 2.2 seconds to go helped lead the visiting Statesmen of Lincoln Trail to a 74-72 come from behind victory over Parkland College in the opener for both teams.  Parkland built a 71-64 lead with 2:51 left after Cedric Smith's three-point play but three turnovers in the final three minutes doomed the Cobras.
Both teams struggled in the opening half as Lincoln Trail built a 34-30 lead at intermission. PC stepped up the defensive pressure to start the second half and quickly built the lead to 45-40 with 13:00 minutes left.  From there both teams found their mark from behind the arc as Trail drained four consecutive three's to tie the game at 56 only to see Jake Thomas come off the bench for PC and drain a three of his own. Trail would regain the lead at 60-59 but the host Cobras would then go on a 12-4 to take their biggest lead of the contest at seven.
Trailing 71-64, LT would get a field goal by Walker with 2:08 left to make it 71-66 and following a PC turnover, Nick Painter's bucket cut the margin to three.  After another Cobra turnover, the Statesmen called time out and the resulting in bounds pass went to Caleb Begle who drained a three from the right side and was also fouled on the play.  With the game tied, Begle made the free three to give LT the one point lead with 1:09 remaining.  Parkland's Cedric Smith was fouled on a rebound and sank 1 of two free throws with 31.7 seconds left and it appeared PC might get the victory when they regained possession following a LT turnover with 14.1 to go.  Unfortunately for PC it wasn't to be as an errant pass was stolen at the top of the key by Walker and he went the distance for the game winning basket. PC got the ball to halfcourt and called time out with 1.3 left but the resulting in bounds pass was knocked out of bounds as time expired.
Walker led Lincoln Trail (1-0) with 16 points and 8 rebounds, Dennis Hightower added 15, and Jesse Tesmer had 11 points and 9 boards. For Parkland (0-1), four players finished in double figures with guard Mark Gilchrese leading the way with 16 points, 4 steals, and 4 assists.  Dominque Walls had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Smith and Shane Seniour each finished with 12. The Cobras return to action on Monday when they play at Kaskaskia.
