Cobra Volleyball Kick Off Home Schedule With Sweep of Kankakee

August 28th, 2012

The #7 Parkland Cobras volleyball team opened their home schedule on Tuesday against #16 Kankakee CC. The Cobras started well and played at a high level throughout the match to win 3-0: 25-11, 25-16, and 25-13.

The two freshmen setters (Jordan Wooden, St. Teresa and Emily Wilson, Lincoln) ran a well-distributed and efficient offense helping fellow freshman Alexis Clemons (St. Teresa) to a match high 11 kills. Sophomore Shelby Geers (St. Joseph-Ogden) notched 8 kills, and freshmen Ally Krenz (Prairie Central) and Megan Casagrande (St. Thomas More) had 6 kills each. Casagrande also led the defense at the net with 7 blocks while sophomore libero Megan Scharnett (Centennial) led the defense in the back row with 11 digs.

Parkland improves to 3-2 and travel to a very difficult Owens CC tournament this weekend in Toledo, OH. The Cobras will have 6 matches over the three day event facing 4 opponents ranked in the top 12 in the country.

Men’s Soccer Kicks Off a New Year With Tough One Goal Loss

August 26th, 2012
The Parkland College Men's Soccer team scored a goal early in each half but the visiting Jefferson College Vikings scored a pair of goals just 5 minutes apart midway through the second half to rally for a 3-2 win in the Cobras season opening match.

Freshman Jesus Morales got the scoring started as he found the back of the net on a feed from Ben Flodstrom just eight minutes into the contest to give PC a 1-0 lead.  Later in the half, Jefferson got a lucky bounce to tie the game. Dwight Dezagon's shot bounced off the left pole only to see the ball bound hard off the chest of Cobra goalie Yuri Marcos and into the goal to tie the score.

Ben Flodstrom helped PC regain the lead as he scored just two minutes into the second half to put the Cobras out in front 2-1.  The score would remain that way until the Vikings regained the momentum. Seemingly spurred on by the ejection of their head coach who had received a rec card just a few minutes earlier, Jeffco tied the score on a goal by Pete Grindel at the 60 minute mark and scored again just five minutes later when Oscar Ortiz scored to put Jeffco ahead to stay. PC had a chance to send the game to overtime but Igor Guanaes just missed connecting in the match's final seconds.

In defeat, the Cobras received excellent play from Champaign Centennial's Ben Flodstrom (1 goal, 1 assist) as well as Morton West standout forward, Jesus Morales (1 goal). The loss moves the Cobras to 0-1 on the season as Jefferson stays undefeated at 1-0-1.

Parkland returns to action next Saturday at 2:00 vs perennial power, Cincinnati State as part of the Coaches vs Cancer Kick For the Cure event that will be held at Urbana High School. PC will also play on Sunday at Urbana against Kankakee CC at 2:00.
