Cobras Come On Strong With Road Win

January 28th, 2012

Caitlin Cody's 21 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists led the Parkland women's basketball team to a 78-50 victory against Lincoln College on Saturday afternoon in Lincoln.  Cody scored the first basket for PC as the Cobras darted out to an 11-0 lead, only to have Lincoln go on an 11-4 run and cut the Cobra lead to 15-11.  PC then scored on their next four possessions to take a 38-24 lead at the half.  Cody tallied 13 points and Kristyne Smyth added six points to help get the Cobras on track in the opening stanza.

The two teams played evenly to start the second half, and PC held a 46-33 lead at the 14:00 mark until Lindsay Lenon hit back to back threes to break the game open and give Parkland a 52-33 lead.  Strong bench play and solid defense enabled the Cobras to roll from there, as Parkland shot 49% for the game and dished out 18 assists.

In addition to Cody's big afternoon, several Cobras helped the Cobra cause: Smyth finished with 11 points and 4 assists.  April Barnett and Uzuri Williams each added 8 points, and Lenon and Heather Baker each finished with 7 points.  Taylor Redeker led the Cobra rebounding effort as she pulled down 7 boards, and Lexie Taylor also dished out 4 assists.  The PC bench was key to the win outscoring their Lynx counterparts 29-12.

Parkland is now 13-7 overall and 2-2 in the M-WAC and will play at Shawnee (1-19) on Wednesday at 5:30 in Ullin. Lincoln falls to (6-13 1-2).

Parkland Holds On For OT Win Versus Milikin JV

January 23rd, 2012

Parkland certainly did not play their best game of the season but held on for a hard fought 80-72 win over the JV squad for the Big Blue of Milikin.  The Cobras needed a huge ball game from Caitlin Cody, who finished with 25 points and 14 rebounds, including some clutch free throws down the stretch.  Kristyne Smyth chipped in 16 points of her own as the Cobra offense struggled with turnovers but had some big plays when they counted to lead to the win.  The Big Blue should be commended for their effort as they only dressed six players in the game but gave Parkland everything they had and more.  The win moves Parkland to 12-7 on the season and Cobrasports.net was there to bring you the call in the tough win for the Cobras.

PC Men Drop Close Contest At JWCC

January 21st, 2012

The #3 ranked Trail Blazers of John Wood Community College had their hands full with the Parkland Cobras who traveled to Quincy and nearly left town with a big win.  Shaq Lowery was very aggressive in the second half and nailed a tough three to give the Cobras a shot at victory in the final seconds.  John Wood was very efficient at the charity stripe in sealing the win, but PC had two looks at a three to tie that fell short in the 74-71 final.  Parkland will have the week off while they prepare for another tough game against Lincoln next Saturday.  Click below for full coverage of the hard fought game.

Parkland Comes Up Short Against Blazers

January 21st, 2012

The Parkland College Women's Basketball team made the long trek to Quincy, IL for a Saturday afternoon showdown with the Trail Blazers of John Wood Community College, and for the first time in five years JWCC was able to come out with a victory.  It was a slow starting game with Parkland trailing by as many as 10 in the first half.  They fought their way back into behind a superb effort from Ebany Brumfield but came up short in the 71-66 final.  The Cobras have a quick turnaround as they will host the Milikin JV team on Monday night.  CobraSports.Net was on hand to bring you the game on the road, another first for us.

CobraSportsNet Video

January 20th, 2012

It's cross training perhaps, but more importantly, it's the Freshman versus Sophomore Challenge for Parkland College Softball (sophs won again). Fortunately for the players, their fans and friends, they are MUCH better at softball than basketball, and they figure to contend for the national JUCO softball title again this year. The queen bee of Parkland athletics, Mickey C. makes an impromptu appearance in this video as well.

Lowery Bucket Boosts Cobras To Hoops Win

January 20th, 2012

Shaq Lowery hit a big three-point basket with just 47 seconds to play to give the Cobras the cushion they needed as the Cobras held on for a hard fought 66-62 win over Lincoln Land in the M-WAC opener for both teams.  Lincoln Land cut the margin to three late and had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds but the shot came up short and PC made 1-2 free throws to seal the win.

Lowery finished with 11 points and was part of a balanced attack that saw four players in double figures. Cody McCollum finished with a game high 12, Sean Montgomery added 11, and Charles Glass came off the bench to score 10. Jamel Johnson just missed a double-double with 9 points and 9 rebounds on the night.

The win moves PC to (12-7 1-0) while the Loggers fall to (8-9 0-1). The road gets even tougher on Saturday as Parkland travel to play in Quincy vs #3 John Wood (15-2 0-0).   Hear it LIVE here on CobraSportsNet.  Brian Schutte will have the call.

Cobras Close, But It’s A Clunker On The Road

January 20th, 2012

The #17 Parkland Women's Basketball team lost on the road to Lincoln Land 55-53 on Tuesday in Springfield. The Cobras effort was lacking in the first half and it showed on the offensive end as they managed only one field goal in their first 15 possessions. Amazingly, the Cobras were only down 8-3 at the 10:00 mark as LLCC also struggled. The Loggers controlled the first half as PC could not get anything going offensively (8-36 field goal shooting for 22%), and LLCC took a 24-18 lead into intermission.

Parkland opened the second half with some energy, closing the gap to 24-23 on a three by Taylor Redeker but then the Loggers went on a 16-5 run to push the lead to 40-28 with 11:00 remaining, as Parkland went ten consecutive possessions without scoring. After the scoring drought, the Cobras went on a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to 40-38, only to see LLCC answer back with an 8-0 run of their own to push their lead back to 48-38.

The Cobras didn't give up as Parkland battled back behind April Barnett and Caitlin Cody's runners to the basket and knotted the score at 53 all with just 30 seconds to play. LLCC's Josie Boehm penetrated the lane and dished to Megan Kroeger for an easy basket to give the Loggers the lead with 7 seconds remaining. The Cobras had a final chance as April Barnett dribbled the length of the court and was fouled as she shot a jumper from the elbow with .8 left on the game clock. With a chance to tie, Barnett's first free throw rimmed out and PC did not get the rebound on the second miss as the buzzer sounded. Shooting woes plagued the Cobras all night long as they shot 34% from the field and a woeful 4-15 (26%) from the free throw line.

Barnett finished with 10 points, while Cody and Redeker each added 8 points while Ebany Brumfield pulled down 13 boards in the defeat. Parkland, now 11-6 overall, 1-1 in the M-WAC, travels to John Wood on Saturday to take on the Blazers in a 2:00 pm contest. Fans can hear the broadcast live on www.CobraSports.Net.

Lincoln Land is now (10-6 1-0) with the win.

Key Games Ahead For Cobras

January 18th, 2012

The Parkland College Basketball teams will hit the road twice this week as they jump into Midwest Athletic Conference (M-WAC) action, and CobraSportsNet will be tagging along for a couple of games as well.

The Women sport a record of (11-5 1-0) after defeating Lewis and Clark 85-80 in their conference opener last Saturday. This week, they will travel to Lincoln Land (9-6) for a 5:30 game on Wednesday night before making the long trek to Quincy to face John Wood (8-9).  The game at JWCC will be carried LIVE here on your source for all things Cobras.  The Cobras will play their third game in six days when they return home next Monday for a 5:30 match-up with the Millikin JV.

At the midway point of the season, balance has certainly been the norm for the Cobras as not a single player is averaging in double figures, but 5 players are averaging 8 points per game or more.  Jeni Free (9.9), Caitlyn Cody (9.6) and Kristyne Smyth (9.2) lead the way with April Barnett (8.3) and Lindsay Lenon (8.1) just behind.  Ebany Brumfield has been the best rebounder at (6.5) while Cody is pulling down 5.9 boards per game. On the Men's side, the Cobras are (11-7 0-0) and will also face Lincoln Land (8-8) and #4 John Wood (15-2) this week.  The JWCC contest will also be carried LIVE on CobraSportsNet, with Brian Schutte at the mike. PC has won seven of their last eight games with their only defeat coming on the road at the hands of nationally-ranked Kirkwood.

Parkland's leading scorer is Shaq Lowery (11.1 ppg) and is followed closely by Jamel Johnson (9.9) and Cody McCollum (9.8).  Johnson is far and away the leader in rebounds, averaging 8.2 per contest.  Much like the women, a balanced attack with a different leader each game has been the key for the Cobras this season.

With the Cobras away, Parkland will once again host the Sangamon Valley Conference Girl's Tournament.  Games will begin at 2:30 on Saturday and continue at 4, 5:30, and the championship game set for 7.  Schools in the tournament are St. Thomas More, Saint Joseph-Ogden, Paxton-Buckley-Loda, Watseka, Momence, Iraquois West, Clifton Central, and CPCI.  The Boys tournament will take place at Parkland on February 4.

Come on out and see some great hoops action at Parkland College.

Quick Start Nets PC Win On Saturday

January 17th, 2012

The Parkland Men's Basketball team was back in action Saturday afternoon in a Region 24 match-up between the Saints of Shawnee Community College in Ullin, IL.  This game would be a low scoring affair with Parkland edging out the host team 59-48 in a defensive battle.  The game started in Parkland's favor, with the Cobras pulling out to a 20-10 lead. The Saints got into some early foul trouble, which lead to 16 first half free throws for Parkland and PC ended up making 21-31 for the game.  In addition to the fouls, poor first half shooting for Shawnee allowed Parkland to go into the halftime break with a 35-19 lead.

The second half would be a series of runs for both teams with Shawnee coming out of the locker room with high energy and shifting the momentum by picking up a charge and finishing with a basket and foul at the other end.  Shawnee would claw back to within 5 points, but Parkland was able to sustain the runs and would never relinquish the lead.

Leading the way offensively for Parkland was sophomore Sean Montgomery with a game high 16 points, followed up by Shaq Lowery with 12.  Shawnee had two players reach double figures, Brandon Roberts finished with a team high 14 points and James McClain added 13.

Parkland's schedule will pick up this week as they will play 3 games in 6 days. The Cobras (10-7, 1-1) played at home Monday night against Rose-Hulman (see game results elsewhere on this page) .  This game was a replacement for the early January game that was canceled against Southeastern CC.  Parkland now will go on the road for their MWAC opener at Lincoln Land Wednesday, followed by a trip to Quincy, IL to face #4 John Wood on Saturday.  That game versus JWCC will be carried LIVE here on CobraSportsNet, with Brian Schutte providing the play-by-play.  Join us for our first regular-season road broadcast!  It's yet another first for CobraSportsNet.

Parkland Men Rock Rose-Hulman JV’s

January 16th, 2012

Parkland started strongly and never looked back enroute to a win over the junior varsity squad from Rose-Human Institute of Technology.  The halftime audit was 50-26, which constituted the Cobras largest lead of the game.  In the second half, RHIT ran some effective screen and roll plays and  converted some three-point shots, but it was not enough.  The up-tempo Cobra game plan rendered the exhausted vistors unable to match their pace.

The Parkland Men's Basketball shot 67% in the first half and overcame a cold shooting second half as they beat the Rose Hulman JV 76-61 at Parkland on Monday night. The game was a tale of two halves as the Cobras were sizzling in the opening 20 minutes making 20-30 shots from the field and building their 50-26 lead at the break. The second half was exactly the opposite as PC substituted freely and could not get in a rhythm, making just 9-36.

The Fighting Engineers tried to make a game of it, hitting 7 of their first 11 shots to open the second half while the Cobras were making 2 of their first 13 attempts. With the run, Rose-Hulman closed the margin to 13 at 56-43 with 13:06 remaining but the Cobras used a 10-0 spurt as Dalten Temples drilled a pair of threes to take the lead back up to 66-43 with just seven minutes to go.

Temples had a strong game adding 6 rebounds to his 11 points and was joined in double figures by Sean Montgomery who also had 11, most of those coming in the first half.  Coach Mast played all fourteen of his players with 13 making into the scoring column.   Alec Houpt led the the visitors with 18 points and 11 rebounds and Jordy Martin added 16. The Cobra bench outscored Rose Hulman 40-0 on the night.

Parkland (11-7) will open M-WAC play on Wednesday night at Lincoln Land in Springfield.  Steve Brown and Brian Porter have the game call, just click the icon below.

Cobras Rebound And Take Out Lewis and Clark

January 14th, 2012

IMG_0693b.jpgIMG_0687b.jpg

The Parkland College women's basketball team needed all of the 25 point lead they built in the first half as they held off hard charging Lewis and Clark 85-80 in the M-WAC opener for both teams. The game looked like it was going to be a laugher early as the Cobras came out on fire hitting 10 of their first 11 shots grabbing a 22-11 lead. They increased the margin to as many as 25 at 42-17 but L&C closed the half on a 14-7 run to cut the margin to 49-31 at intermission. The Cobras shot 22-30 (73.3%) in the opening half and could have had a bigger lead but made just 4-11 from the line.

The second half was a completely different story as the Blazers turned up the pressure forcing Cobra turnovers and turning them into points. Lewis and Clark would finally tie the game at 72 with just over 5 minutes remaining and the two teams were still knotted up at 76-76 before the Cobras would seal the win.  Ebany Brumfield's put back gave the Cobras a two point lead, Jeni Free made 1-2 free throws, and Caitlyn Cody converted a rebound of her own missed shot made it 81-76 with 2:01 left.

The Blazers made a pair of free throws to cut the lead back to three before PC leading scorer Kristyne Smyth's lay-up on a nice pass from Cody put the Cobras back up 5.  Lewis and Clark would again answer back with a basket by Latrice Taylor, and actually had two chances to tie the game after a PC turnover and two missed free throws, but both three-point attempts were off line and Free sank two free throws with 4.5 seconds remaining to secure the win.

Smyth led the Cobras with 17 points and 7 assists, Cody had 13 points and 5 rebounds, while April Barnett added 11.  Heather Baker had a strong game finishing with 6 points and 11 rebounds. The inside trio of Baker, Free, and Brumfield combined for 24 points and 22 rebounds as the Cobras won the battle on the glass 46-31.  Claudette Maurice led all scorers with 26 points for Lewis and Clark.

PC moves to (11-5 1-0) while the Blazers drop to (6-8 0-1). Parkland will return to action on Wednesday at 5:30 when they travel to Springfield to take on Lincoln Land (9-6 0-0).

Cobras Falter In OT Against Powerhouse

January 12th, 2012

The Parkland Women's Basketball team went toe to toe with D-1 power Jefferson College on Wednesday night but fell short, 82-74, in overtime in Hillsboro, MO.  Parkland took an early 6-2 lead, only to see the hosts take an 11-7 advantage. Parkland stayed close behind inspiring play from their bench, as Taylor Redeker hit for 3 first half three-pointers.

Parkland trailed by just two points at intermission and the second half would also be a see-saw battle, full of runs and spurts by both teams. The Vikings held a 46-41 lead at the 12:00 mark, but the Cobras went on 19-8 run sparked by two more threes from Redeker and baskets by Ebany Brumfield and Heather Baker to give PC a 58-52 lead with just 4:30 remaining. Once again, Jeff Co. would claw back and regained the lead at 67-65 before Kristyne Smyth hit a layup in the paint to tie the score at 67-all. The Parkland defense held strong the final :08 seconds to force overtime as Jeff Co missed a shot at the buzzer.  The Cobras missed a chance to win the game in the final minute of regulation but missed three of four free throw attempts.

The overtime session was all Jefferson, as the Cobras lost their defensive edge and routinely fouled on the defensive end to give the Vikings trips to the foul line where they converted 13-14 in the extra period.  PC found good shots hard to come by, managing only four points in 4 and a half minutes. Jeff Co finished 31-37 from the charity stripe (83%), while PC managed only a 20-32 effort (62%) on the evening.

Redeker scored a career high 15 points (5-9 from three point range), while Barnett chipped in with 10 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals. Jeni Free pulled down 11 rebounds to help the Cobras on the boards.

Parkland is now 10-5 and opens M-WAC conference play on Saturday as they host Lewis and Clark at 2 pm at the Dodds Athletic Center.   You can hear the game LVE here on CobraSportsNet.  Just Click on the "GO GREEN" link in the right-hand margin of this web page.

Cobra Men’s Hoops Loses Tough Game On The Road

January 8th, 2012

The Parkland men's basketball team opened the second half of their season with a challenging road game at #5 Kirkwood on Saturday in Cedar Rapids, IA.  After grabbing an early lead, the Cobras fell 61-56. The game turned out to be a defensive grind, and it would go down to the wire with both teams having control at different times.  The Cobras started off the game with an impressive lob dunk to Tiger O'Neil with the assist coming from Shaq Lowery.  This set the tone for the game.  The lead would change hands a few times in the first half, but the Cobras found themselves up 27-25 at half.

The start of the second half began with an 8-0 run for Parkland and a quick timeout for the Eagles, who faced their biggest deficit of the game at 35-25.  However, the home team went on a run of their own and eventually build a 5 point lead midway through the second half.  Parkland closed the gap to 2 with a score of 53-51 with just over 3 minutes to play but down the stretch, the Eagles won the game at the foul line.  Parkland would finish just 4-10 from the line while Kirkwood made 11-16 from the line for the contest.

Shaq Lowery tied for the game high score with 16 points while Cody McCollum added 9.  Kirkwood had two players in double figures.  Antione Howard finished with 16 points connecting on four 3-pointers and Michael Weber added 11 points with three of his own 3-pointers, including two big threes late in the game.

Parkland (9-7) will travel to Ullin, IL to play Region 24 foe Shawnee next Saturday with a 4pm tip off.
