Cobras Bounce Back With Win Over Cavaliers

December 30th, 2011

The Parkland College Women had a short memory after falling to Kirkwood yesterday to bounce back with a tough win over Kankakee Community College.  The Cavaliers are down a bit this season but are perennial contenders nationally, and gave the Cobras everything they could handle on the home floor.  Parkland was able to secure the 66-60 win with some huge offensive rebounds down the stretch and two big three's from Lindsay Lennon, who finished with a team high 14.  The win moves the Cobras to (10-4) on the season as they will take a few days off before getting back under way after the new year. was on hand to bring you the excitement from the Dodds Athletic Center at Parkland College.

Academic Performance of Parkland Athletes: Outstanding!

December 28th, 2011

For the first time, Parkland College athletes earned a combined grade point average (for all sports) that was over 3.0, finishing at 3.033 for the fall semester.  Congratulations are in order for the women's basketball team for earning the over-all best team GPA with a sparkling 3.325.  They edged out the softball (3.273) and volleyball (3.229) teams by less then one-tenth of a point.  The biggest improvement this fall came among the men's sports, where the guys finished with their highest ever grade point average of 2.986!  Overall, 7 of the 10 Cobra sports teams finished with Fall GPA's over 3.0.

Strong academic achievement is nothing new to Parkland College Athletics.  But the past fall was outstanding.  Golf was once again the top academic team on the men's side.  Other teams made strong gains in academic GPA.  Especially exciting were the significant improvements made in team GPA by the volleyball (+.391), men's basketball (+.315), and baseball (+.243) teams.

It was a great job by our Parkland athletes, faculty and coaches who contributed to this outstanding semester in the classroom.  Special props are in order for Coach Nate Mast for supporting and monitoring this improvement.

We at CobraSportsNet make no secret of the fact that we started this project to honor the achievements of our student athletes and all who support them.  With their classroom successes again this fall, they again have proven to be more than deserving.  Well done!

Congratulations from all of us at CobraSportsNet!

Happy Holidays, and Thank You For 40,000 Website Hits!

Parkland Women Keep The Statesmen Winless

December 17th, 2011

The Cobra Basketball team played a complete game and picked up win number nine in a 83-49 win over Lincoln Trail College.  Parkland used a stellar post game and some hot shooting to keep the Statesmen out of the win column on the year.  Jenni Free and Ebony Brumfield led the charge for Parkland who also shot lights out from the arc.  CobraSports.Net was on hand; Steve Brown and Brian Schutte bring you the play-by-play call.

Men Get Hoops Classic Win

December 12th, 2011

The Parkland Men's Basketball team wrapped up a great weekend by knocking off Morton College 59-46 to finish as the lone undefeated team at the Lincoln College Classic. PC knocked off Triton on Friday night while Morton upset the host Lynx.

The first half would be a back and forth affair as Morton continued their strong guard play, attacking the basket and finishing around the rim. The Hawks Lamont Sanders three with just seconds to play in the half, gave Morton a 29-25 lead at half.

The Cobras still trailed for most of the early part of the second half before they finally got things going at both ends of the court.  Defensive stops, leading to transition points, eventually allowed PC to pull away with about five minutes remaining.

Balance was once again the key as six players finished with between 6 and 12 points. Cody  McCollum would lead all scorers with 12 points while always dependable Jamel Johnson finished a rebound short of a double-double with 10 and 9 respectively.  The Cobras (8-6) will have a week to prepare for a rematch against the Trailblazers of Lewis and Clark, who PC defeated earlier this season. Game is set for 4:00 in Godfrey.

Cobras Get Solid Win In Women’s Hoops

December 12th, 2011

The PC Women's Basketball team used solid bench play and a staunch defense on Saturday to post a 58-56 win over Joliet Junior College.  The Cobra bench scored 34 of the Cobras 58 points while PC's defense was able to deny the Wolves a chance to tie the game on their final possession.

PC led most of the first half building a 24-15 lead on a Uzuri Williams bucket. After JJC cut the lead to three, Lexie Taylor drove the length of the court to drain a runner in the lane at the buzzer to give the Cobras a 31-26 lead at the halftime break.  The second half was more of the same as PC could not shake the pesky hosts and led just 46-45 with 8:30 minutes to play.

From there Lindsay Lenon drained a three, her 4th of the game, and when Caitlyn Cody hit a baseline jumper to put the Cobras up by six with 3:15 left.  Unfortunately, that would be the last time PC would score and fortunately their defense came through down the stretch holding the Woves to just four points of their own.

Kristyne Smyth led the way for PC (8-3) with 13 points, including a perfect 7-7 at the line. Lenon came off the bench to score 12 and Lexie Taylor added 8 points and Cody pulled down 6 boards.  Parkland will take the week off for finals before hosting Lincoln Trail on Saturday December 17 at the Dodds Athletic Center.

Kaskaskia Put Up Strong Fight But Fall To Cobras

December 7th, 2011

Coach Mast and the Cobra Men won a second straight contest at home as the visiting Blue Devils of Kaskaskia came up short in the 80-71 final.  Sophomore point guard Shaq Lowery led the charge with 21 points, at times playing off the ball and making big contributions.  The defense picked up in the second half and the award for effort definitely went to Sean Montgomery, who also finished in double figures.  Montgomery contributed in many areas and had his best game as a Cobra in front of the home crowd.  Brian Schutte and Chris Hastings bring you the exciting action from the Dodds Athletic Center.

Cobras End Two Game Slide With OT Win Over Olney Central

December 7th, 2011

The Parkland Women got a little revenge tonight as they were able to knock off Olney Central College in a rematch from earlier in the year in which the Blue Knights defeated the Cobras in their season debut.  Olney Central was not so lucky this time as the Cobras used a great game from Jenni Free to pick up a 92-87 win to snap a two game skid.  Olney held tough as Jessica Zavoral drained two deep threes to tie the game, the second of which sent the game to OT.  But with the win the Cobras move to 7-3 on the year as was on hand to bring you the call.

The revamped line up of games will include 10 teams, featuring four local squads in addition to several teams featuring major recruits or players expected to get NCAA D-1 offers.

The line-up:

12:15   Rantoul (Travis Britt) vs Chicago Hope Academy

2:00     Peoria Manual vs Springfield Lanphier

3:45     St. Thomas More vs Urbana

5:30     Champaign Centennial vs Chicago Curie

7:15     Niles Notre Dame vs Crete-Monee

"We are excited to host the premier High School Basketball Event in Champaign-Urbana at the Dodds Athletic Center at Parkland." said Rod Lovett, Parkland Athletic Director.  "I knew when I was contacted by the CVB that we needed to make this work if we could. This is an important event in our community and I didn't want to see it canceled. I understand that it won't be the same as playing at the Assembly Hall but we hope that the players, coaches, and fans will still enjoy playing the game and have a positive experience."

Cobras Drop Second Straight Home Contest

December 3rd, 2011

The #14 Cobras raced out to a fast start but couldn't hang on as the #20 Lakers of Lake Land College came in to the Dodds Athletic Center and picked up a big Region 24 win.  The Lakers were looking to return the favor after the Cobras defeated Lake Land in last years regional championship and came out with a 60-57 win on the road.  Lauren Bogle led the way for the Lakers with 25 points as Parkland made a late run but came up a little short.  Parkland will be off until Wednesday when Olney will come to Champaign and the Cobras will look to break their skid.  As always was on hand to bring you the call so click below and enjoy.

Parkland Men Stumble At IWU

December 2nd, 2011

The Parkland Men's basketball team continued their early season woes, losing their third straight game falling to the Illinois Wesleyan JV team 85-81 Tuesday night at the Shirk Center in Bloomington, IL.  The Cobras, struggling to find consistent play on both ends of the floor, saw defensive breakdowns prevent the fast-paced Cobras from attacking on the offensive end.  The Titans of Illinois Welseyan were tough to beat shooting 10-14 from behind the 3-point arc and converting on 15 of 17 from the free throw line.  The Cobras, on the other hand, shot a dismal 25% from the 3-point line and only converted on 56% of their free throws.

The game went back and forth for the majority of the contest, with neither team able to pull away, as the lead never hit double digits.  With a halftime score of 35-32, the second half would open up offensively for both teams.  Finally, the Cobras grabbed a one point lead with under 2 minutes to play but PC was unable to convert on their next possession and IWU's Parker Musselman  would score 5 big points in the remaining minutes to shut the door on the Cobras. Musselman finished with a game high 29 points for the Titans.

The Cobras had a balanced attack offensively with 7 players scoring 9 points or more, including 5 in double figures.  Leading the way was sophomore transfer Sean Montgomery coming off the bench to add 16 points.  Tiger O'Neil tossed in 14 while Cody McCollum added 11.  Jamel Johnson had a solid night finishing with 10 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 steals.

Parkland (4-6) will try to end their skid when they return home Saturday for another non-conference match against the Lancers of the College of Lake County (5-1) in a 4pm tip-off.  Hear it LIVE here at CobraSportsNet.
