Parkland Women Come Up Short in Region 24 Title Game

October 30th, 2011

For the first time in school history, the Parkland College Women's Soccer team advanced to Regional championship match but ran into a talented and hungry team from Lewis and Clark.  The Cobras had to battle rain and high winds in a somewhat unconventional match that saw Parkland take a one goal lead in at the half.  Lewis and Clark were certainly the aggressors in second half as they had a couple of good looks at the net and buried them both to outpoint Parkland 2-1.  It was a tough match and it brought to an end a very successful season for Coach Alford and the Cobras, who look to build upon this year and continue to make some noise in the region.  CobraSports.Net congratulates Coach Alford and his entire team on an outstanding season.  You've made us all proud to be Cobra fans!

UPDATE:Men’s Soccer Team Concludes Excellent Season

October 26th, 2011

The Parkland Men's Soccer but up a valiant effort but fell to top seed and #13 Lincoln College 4-1 in a Region 24 Semi-Final played in wet and cool conditions in Lincoln on Wednesday afternoon.

Lincoln jumped on top early scoring on a goal off of a corner kick. Adrien Sathler picked up a deflection and put the ball into the back of the net to put the Lynx up 1-0. In the 20th minute, freshman standout Dhani Cerra was fouled from behind just outside the penalty area. Douglass Andrade bent the ball around the Lincoln wall and into the bottom corner of the goal to tie the match. It was Andrade sixth goal in the last three games.

It seemed that PC had grabbed the momentum in the match but the results of the next 15 minutes would determine the outcome.  In the 25th minute, off another corner kick, Lincoln's leading scorer and Region 24 Player of the Year Edwin Moalosi found the rebounding ball and put it in the net to regain the lead for the Lynx.  Just 10 minutes later, midfielder Julio Velasquez slotted a ball through the Cobra defense setting up a Moalosi break away goal.

Trailing 3-1 at the half, PC kept up the pressure creating several scoring opportunities but could not convert them into goals.  The Cobras actually out shot the host's 10-9 for the match but were unable to capitalize against a tough Lincoln defensive line.  The Lynx added their final goal on a penalty kick with just 8 seconds remaining.

PC finishes the season at (10-9-1) with six of their nine losses coming against ranked opponents. Lincoln (16-3) will host Illinois Central College (13-4-1) at noon on Saturday for the Region 24 championship.  ICC advance to the finals with a 2-1 win over Lincoln Land. Region 24 Men's Soccer Semi-Finals:

#1 Lincoln (16-3) 4

#4 Parkland (10-9-1) 1 - - (game details to follow).

#2 Illinois Central (13-4-1) 2

#3 Lincoln Land (11-5-3) 1

Parkland Men Take Down SWIC in Playoff Opener

October 22nd, 2011

The Cobra soccer team came out aggressive and was able to hold off a talented team from SWIC by a 2-1 final to advance in the Region 24 tournament.  Sophomore Douglas Andrade was not ready for his Parkland career come to an end as he was fantastic with the ball and scored both Cobra goals.  Parkland went up 1-0 when Andrade took a cross from fellow Sophomore Khody Ellis and buried it in the back of the net.  SWIC answered back less than  ten minutes later but the Blue Storm lost track of Andrade who got a second goal in the half to make the final.  Brian Schutte was on hand to bring you the inaugural edition of playoff soccer right here on Cobrasports.net.  Click below for the full call.

Parkland Basketball Teams Ranked In Top 10

October 20th, 2011

IMG_0091b.jpg

Both the Parkland College Men's and Women's Basketball teams are ranked in the Pre-Season NJCAA D-2 Top 10, released by the NJCAA earlier today.

The Cobra Men, who surprised many with their run to the National tournament, are ranked #5 after finishing 22-13 last season and going 1-2 at Nationals. PC has a very difficult schedule this season with trips to four tournaments including events at Hutchison CC KS., and Southeastern Iowa and games against several highly regarded D-1 and D-2 programs. The Cobras will open the season on November 3rd against Central Florida CC in the opening round of the Hutch Classic. After six road games, PC will play their first home game of the year on November 16 against Lewis and Clark.

The Parkland Women would like to make it four straight trips to Nationals and they will begin the season as the #9 ranked team in D-2. PC returns just two players from last season's team that placed 3rd in the Nation. The Women get underway with a road game at Olney Central College on November 1st before opening at home on November 9th against Illinois Valley CC. Like the men, the schedule is a tough one as the Cobras face nationally ranked teams from Kirkwood, Kankakee, and Illinois Valley along with the normally talented Region 24 opponents from Lincoln Land, Lake Land, Lewis and Clark, and ICC.

Parklnd Men Wrap Up Regular Season With Win Over U of I Club

October 18th, 2011

After a slow start, the Cobras finished anything but.  Held scoreless for the opening 43 minutes of the first half, the Cobras scored an improbable two goal in the final two minutes to take a 2-1 lead into the half.  They were far from done as in the second half Michael Severino connected on a pair of goals and Douglas Andrade notched a hat trick to help the Cobras cruise to the 7-1 win.  The Cobras look forward to kicking off the regional tournament as they will host SWIC on Saturday with a noon start.  Click below for the audio coverage.

Cobra Women Come Up Short As Regular Season Concludes

October 17th, 2011

The Parkland Women's Soccer team came into the regular season finale with a zero in the loss column but would not finish the day that way as they fell to a very talented team from Kaskaskia.  The teams were scoreless at the half until Miranda Burroughs, ranked #6 nationally in goals, buried the first of two goals for her as the Blue Angels got the lead.  Parkland continued to put pressure on the defense but could not capitalize on any of their opportunities.  The loss drops the Cobra record to 13-1-1 as they look forward to hosting their first game of the regional tournament on Thursday October 27.  Cobrasports.net was on hand to bring you the call on a cool and windy afternoon at Parkland College.

Parkland Volleyball Keeps On Keepin’ On!

October 10th, 2011

The #4 Parkland Cobras volleyball team concluded the second day of the DMACC tournament with another pair of wins and was the only team of the 8 teams in attendance to escape the weekend with an unblemished record.

In the 8am match, Parkland faced off with a 20-member team from Iowa Central CC.  The Tritons, ranked #15 in the nation, came out with a 2-1 lead, but the Cobras fought back to take the match 3-2 --- 33-31, 23-25, 15-25, 25-16, 15-11, ending the Tritons 23 match winning streak.   Melanie Moore (Centennial) registered a career high 50 assists, and two other Cobras notched career highs in kills as Shelby Geers (St. Joseph-Ogden) and Shannon Boone (Shelbyville) had 18 and 16 kills, respectively.  Nechelle Veal (Thornton Fractional North) and Geers led the team in blocks with 5 each, and Megan Scharnett (Centennial) had 20 digs.

After the tough 5-set match,  Parkland faced another tough test in host #16 Des Moines Area CC.  DMACC jumped out to a early 1-0 set lead, but the Cobras regrouped and took the next three winning 3-1 with scores of 16-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-15.  Moore again led the offense well with 41 assists.  Three Cobras had double-digit kills with Morgan Martells (Sterling) leading with the way with 13, and Boone & Geers each had 10.  Scharnett had her best day as a Cobra playing outstanding defense which often allowed Moore and the hitters to quickly convert defense to offense as Scharnett notched a career high 30 digs in the four-set match giving her 50 on the day.

The #4 Cobras (29-4) have now won 15 straight ahead of an M-WAC showdown on Wednesday night against Lincoln Land. PC can clinch the title with a win over the #20 Loggers. A victory would also earn PC the #1 seed in the Region 24 tournament which gets underway the first weekend in November.
