Cobra Women Win Battle Of Ranked Teams On The Soccer Field

September 28th, 2011

The Cobra Women were able to hold of a late surge by SWIC to remain unbeaten on the season.  PC broke on top first as Kelsie Donley scored on an assist from Audra Krusz.  It appeared PC would take a 1-0 lead to the break but the Blue Storm connect in the final five minutes of the half to tie the match at 1.  The tie would be short lived as Jenny Musick floated a shot into the right corner of the net just 90 seconds into the second half to put PC on top once again. The Cobras controlled the tempo for much of the half and Nashla Vega connected on a nearly identical goal as Musick's at the 83 minute mark, to make it 3-1. SWIC would not give up and cut the margin to one with a late goal but the Cobras would not be denied in improving to (10-0) on the season.  Cobrsports.net was outside on the chilly and windy afternoon to bring you the coverage.  Click below for the audio coverage of all the action.

September 28th, 2011

Fresh off an impressive 7-0 weekend which included wins over ranked foes Illinois Central and Owens,  the Parkland College Volleyball team jumped eight spots to #4 in the latest NJCAA D-2 Volleyball Poll.  The ranking equals the Cobras previous high this season which was achieved back on September 7.

The Cobras (23-4) have a well deserved light week with just one match, tonight at 6:00 in Champaign against the Millikin University JV.  Parkland is currently sporting a nine-match winning streak and is (6-3) against teams currently ranked in the top #20. The Cobras have plenty of challenges remaining with 8 matches still to be played against ranked opponents.

PC Men Stumble Against Quick ICC Foes

September 27th, 2011

Parkland missed some chances early, but ICC didn't miss theirs late.  A first half goal by Khody Ellis gave Parkland a 1-0 lead, but it didn't hold up for long, as ICC shot in two goals of their own in the first half, and added three more in the second stanza for a 5-1 result.

After the Cobras withstood a furious start to the match, which saw the Cougars turned away on three excellent scoring opportunities in the opening five minutes, PC actually grabbed the early lead. After some early pressure, PC controlled the match over the next 25 minutes. Despite failing to convert on a penalty kick earlier in the half, the Cobras scored first in the 23rd minute when PC earned a free kick and Mike Severino passed the ball to fellow freshman Dhani Cerra who fed Khody Ellis who banged the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Parkland would carry that lead into the 37th minute before Amara Soumah tied the match with a break away goal. Just one minute later Courage Chirandu squeezed a goal into the left side of the net following a Cougar corner kick to make it 2-1 at intermission.

The second half was no contest as ICC outshot the Cobras 7-1 and connected again on goals by Soumah and Chirandu while Javier Torres wrapped up the scoring. ICC (4-5-1 2-1) outshot PC 14-7 for the match, handing the Cobras their first loss of the season to a unranked foe. Parkland (7-5 1-2) will get another crack against a ranked opponent when they play #9 Jeffferson College (9-1) on Saturday.

Soccer Teams Win On The Road

September 25th, 2011

Saturday was a good day for the Parkland College Soccer teams as both came away with road victories against top competition. The #14 Women kept their unbeaten season intact with a 3-0 shutout of Lewis and Clark while the Men also posted a shutout, blanking Southwestern Illinois College 1-0.

For the PC women, the Cobras would score all three goals in the first half, and then they kept up the defensive pressure to seal the win. Keren Sharabi scored first for PC on an assist from Sadie Somers. Jenny Musick made it 2-0 with a goal on a feed from Audra Krusz and Kim Vega rounded out the scoring as she scored and Sharabi picked up the assist. Micaela McLennand was once again solid in goal as PC posted their fifth shutout of the season.  The Cobras (9-0) return home for another Region 24 showdown against SWIC @ 4:00 on Wednesday.

The PC Men rebounded from a tough loss against Lincoln Land earlier in the week to pick up a shutout win of their own, blanking the SWIC Blue Storm 1-0. Off a broken SWIC set piece, Michael Severino cleared out the ball passing wide to Gregg Flores who fed Doug Andrade. Andrade got the ball to fellow Brazilian Dhani Cerra, who beat two defenders and the goalkeeper at the 65 minute mark for the lone goal of the match.  Jason Saucedo and a tough Cobra defense picked up their fifth shutout of the year in improving to 7-4. SWIC drops to 6-2-3 with the loss. Next up for PC is a match with nemesis Illinois Central College on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.  CobraSportsNet will have this game LIVE at 3:50.

ICC is just (3-5-1) on the season but is coming off an impressive 4-1 win over #17 Lincoln Land on Friday.
