Parkland Sluggers Rated Near The Top

January 31st, 2011
Both the Parkland Baseball and Softball teams check in at #5 in their respective pre-season NJCAA Polls. Coach Matt Kennedy's squad is coming off back to back appearances at the D-2 World Series, following up their 2009 National Championship with a 5th place finish last season.  In two years at the helm of the Cobras, Kennedy is just one victory shy of the 100 win plateau as his teams have compiled an amazing 99-22 mark over the past two seasons. This year's team is one of the program's youngest squads and will open the season at the USA Junior College Classic held in Millington, Tennessee. PC will play 5 games at the 6 team event, matching up with #15 Iowa Central, #18 Lackawanna PA, SE Iowa, Muscatine, and Carl Sandburg.  The Cobras are slated to play their first 16 games on the road before opening at home on March 26 against Shawnee.
The PC Softball team also comes in at #5 on the heels of a 9th place finish at last years National Championships. After missing the tourney the previous two seasons, Coach Chuck Clutts and his team returned to Nationals for the 7th time in 10 seasons.  Clutts, who is in his 11th season at PC, has an outstanding 450-148-2 record while leading the Cobras.  As always, Parkland will play one of the toughest schedules in the country, opening at the prestigious NFCA Classic in Panama City, Florida March 4-6. The Cobras open pool play with a bang playing D-1 #9 Chattanooga State, followed by games against Temple College of Texas and Florida State College of Jacksonville. PC will then move on to Pensacola Beach for their annual Spring Trip and will open at home on March 24 against M-WAC foe Danville.

Cobra Women Whack DACC 79-40

January 29th, 2011

Supercharged by the scoring of Hannah Ohl and a tenacious defense anchored by Lauren Taylor, Ohl, and several others, the Cobras took a 15 point lead to the break, and then they pulled away to rout a short-handed and fatigued Jaguar squad by a final of 79-40.

With the win, Parkland College Women's Basketball Coach Karrie Redeker earned her 100th win at PC Saturday night.   Redeker, in her 4th year at PC, now has a career record of 100-27 for the Cobras.
Parkland built an early lead as Hannah Ohl came out on fire scoring 10 of PC's first 18 points as the Cobras raced to an 18-8 lead.  DACC would keep the game close before a late surge put PC ahead by 15 at the break.  After a slow start to the 2nd half, things warmed up and the Cobras used a smothering defense to create numerous fast break points and outscored the visitors 41-17 after intermission.
The Cobras won convincingly despite not shooting as well as they normally do, making just 41% of their shots. PC made up for the misfires by dominating the glass 50-28 and forcing 30 Jaguar turnovers.
Hannah Ohl led the attack with 19 points and Ana Deters finished with 12 points and 9 boards.  April Barnett and Traci Osby had big games off the bench as Barnett had 7 points and 8 boards while Osby added 7 points and 6 boards.  Amanda Boyd also played well scoring 8 points and chasing down 7 rebounds. Dani Gooch paced DACC with 13 points before fouling out.
The win moves the #4 ranked Cobras to (20-2 5-0) while DACC drops to (3-17 0-4). Next up for PC will be a huge road contest on Feb. 2 @ #12 Illinois Central.

Steve Brown, Brian Schutte, and Ryan Ifft have the action call.

Parkland Men Outlast Stubborn DACC

January 29th, 2011

The Parkland Men's Basketball team used a late 19-4 surge to break open a close game and pulled away for a 66-55 win over #19 ranked DACC in a key M-WAC contest.
The two teams were tied at 30 at the midway point and the game remained a back and forth affair with the Cobras taking the lead for good on a Shaquille Lowery bucket with 8:39 to go giving the Cobras a one-point lead. From their the Cobras turned up the pressure and the Jaguars went cold an PC built their lead up to 15 at 63-48 with just over a minute remaining.   The Jaguars hit shots late as the Cobras missed a few free throws to make the final look closer than it really was.
The combination of Lowery and DJ Hoskins were key as Hoskins finished with 19 points and Lowery chipped in 16 points and added 3 assists.  PC picked up the intensity after the break and outboarded the Jaguars 36-33.  Jamel Johnson had 8 boards while Carlton Gray came up with 7 boards of his own.  Marcus Lewis also came off the bench and made three big baskets during the late run to help seal the win.

Parkland Women Register Another Big Win

January 22nd, 2011
The Parkland College Women's team used an incredible 46-14 run over the final 12:34 minutes of the game to overwhelm Lincoln College 100-64. The win was the Cobras 8th straight and second consecutive game hitting the century mark following a 111 point outburst versus Shawnee just three days earlier.
Leading just 54-50, the duo of Traci Osby and Hannah Ohl took over as Osby scored 14 of her game high 20 after intermission and Ohl tossed in 10 of her 14 during the run.  Osby had an outstanding game off the bench adding 12 rebounds to her 20 points to collect a double-double.  Carly Norton added 11 points knocking down three more 3's and Kristyne Smyth chipped in 10.  Three other Cobras just missed double figures as Lauren Taylor, Amanda Boyd, and Jeni Free each scored 9 points. April Barnett dished out 8 of the Cobras 21 assists on the day.
PC shot 51% for the game and 75% from the line while out rebounding the Lynx 49-33.  The Cobras built an early 18 point lead only to see Lincoln trail by just 9 at the break. The Lynx forced PC into turnovers on 8 of their first 10 possessions in the second half to spark a 13-4 run and cut the margin to four before the Cobras took command.  Parkland (19-2 4-0) will be off until next Saturday when they host Danville at 2:00. Lincoln drops to (11-9 0-3) with the defeat.

Cobra Men Come Up Short Against Defending National Champion Lincoln College

January 22nd, 2011
The Parkland Men battled the defending National Champions for 40 minutes but a 13-3 run to end the game spelled doom for the Cobras as they fall 84-74.  PC got off to a fast start building an early 28-18 lead as PC knocked down 6-7 from behind the arc. However Lincoln chipped away and tied the contest at 40 at the half.
The game was a back and forth affair in the second half with neither team building a lead of more than 5 points before Jamel Johnson's bucket tied the game at 71 with 3:55 left.  From that ppoint forward, Lincoln would force the Cobras into 4 big turnovers and PC went cold from the field making just one more basket in the game while Lincoln salted the game away with free throws and buckets in transition.
Shaquille Lowery had a strong game for PC leading all scorers with 20 points and handing out 6 assists. Jamel Johnson added 11 points and 6 boards while Cody McCollum added 10 points and 7 rebounds.  Parkland's leading scorer on the season, DJ Hoskins fouled out with just 5 points, nearly 9 below his average.   West Dawson paced the Lynx with 18 points and 11 rebounds, DeMarius Sumrell added 17 points and 8 boards, while Tylon Deal (11)and Rahjan Muhammad had 10 to finish in double figures as well.
Lincoln made 49% of their shots from the field but the difference was at the free throw line where Lincoln outscored PC 20-10. The Cobras also committed 22 turnovers in the contest.  LC improves to (15-5 2-1) on the season while the Cobras drop to (10-10 1-2).
On Wednesday:
The Parkland Men's Basketball team went on a non-conference road trip to play the Trailblazers of Vincennes and came away with a big 74-71 win on Wednesday night.
The Cobras came out hot against VU, a traditional D-1 powerhouse with 11 straight seasons of 20+ wins, knocking down 6 three's en route to a 36-20 first half lead.  The Blazers Nick Wiggins drained two late three's and cut the Cobras lead to just 38-31 at the break.
The second half turned into a back and forth affair but solid guard play and a strong effort on the glass helped PC hang on.  Free throws by Shaquille Lowery and DJ Hoskins late in the contest helped PC build the lead back up to 10 with just under two minutes to play before VU made one final comeback. Following a late Cobras turnover, Wiggins 25 foot attempt at the buzzer came up short and the Cobras escaped with the victory.
Lowery lead all Parkland players with 22 points and 5 assists including 5-7 from behind the arc. DJ Hoskins added 12, Dean Neaville had a solid over-all effort with 8 points and 10 big rebounds, and Tiger O'Neill came off the bench to score 10.  Nick Wiggins drained 5 of 11 three's to finish with 22 points, Jordan Hickman had 17, and sophomore Jan Petrovic had a monster game with 12 points and 20 rebounds in a losing effort.
Parkland (11-10 1-2) will return to action on Saturday with a big M-WAC showdown versus rival Danville Area CC starting at 4:00. It should be an exciting contest with the Hall of Fame Induction ceremonies scheduled for halftime.

Cobra Men Get Back to Winning

January 19th, 2011

Parkland's Cobras were able to overcome some early slow shooting to register a 70-66 victory over Shawnee, as Jamel Johnson scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half, ending the Saints winning streak at 6 games.  Both teams struggled in the first half but Cody McCollum scored 14 of his game high 21 points in the opening period to put PC ahead 33-28 at the break.

The Cobras started the second half ice cold missing their first nine shots as the Saints grabbed a 36-33 lead before McCollum broke the scoring drought.  The teams went back and forth before McCollum's three-pointer gave the Cobras the lead for good at 48-46 with just under nine minutes remaining.  DJ Hoskins knocked down a pair of three's and Shaq Lowery's three as the shot clock expired gave PC an eight point lead with 1:27 left. Shawnee could get no closer then the final margin with a couple of late baskets.
Johnson finished with a double-double, adding 10 boards to his 19 point outburst while Hoskins was the only other PC player in double figures scoring 13.  Deantra Scott of Shawnee led all scorers with 27 points on 12-15 shooting from the field.
PC (10-9 1-1) will host defending National Champions Lincoln College (14-5 1-1) at 12:00 on Saturday. The #6 Lynx will be an angry bunch coming off a stunning 96-74 loss tonight at John Wood.

Men Drop BB Contest On The Road

January 17th, 2011

The PC men were not able to mount a sufficient come-back, slipping behind 18-0 to start the game, and falling to the host JWCC Blazers, 73-59.

The Cobras made a tremendous comeback but could not overcome an ice cold start in their loss to JWCC.  Down by 18, PC would not score their first points of the game until the 13:44 mark of the opening period.  The Cobras would climb to within 13 at the break and they trailed by just 3 with only 12 minutes remaining.  PC would have several chances to grab the lead but 23 turnovers and being out rebounded 33-21 spelled disaster for PC in their comeback effort.

Jamel Johnson scored 15 points and had 6 boards to lead the offense while DJ Hoskins also chipped in 15.  Cody McCollum added 10 and Shaq Lowery had a solid over-all game with 10 points, 5 boards, and 5 assists.

PC falls to (9-8 1-1) while John Wood improves to (11-6 1-0). Parkland will play at Lewis and Clark in a non-conference game on Monday before hosting Shawnee at 7:30 on Wednesday.  Listen to the game here!

January 17th, 2011

The #6 PC Women's Basketball team rode hot shooting on Saturday as they pulled away for a 77-66 victory over John Wood CC.  PC scored on 5 of their first 7 possessions to take an early 11-4 lead before JWCC would rally to take their first lead at 18-16 at the midway point of the opening half.  The game would be tied at halftime, and JWCC would actually open up a 6 point lead right after intermission.  Tied at 45, PC went on a 17-9 run and eventually push the lead to double digits, capped by back to back buckets by Kristyne Smyth and April Barnett.  Parkland was able to hold off the Blazers by shooting 59% in the second half (55% for the game) and by winning the battle of the boards by a 40-26 margin.

#6 Women’s Hoopsters Down #20 Loggers in Tough Game

January 12th, 2011

The final was 66-48, but that does not count all the bruises handed out along the way.  This was a "physical" game, but a very good one for coach Karrie Redeker's squad as the #6 ranked Cobras pulled away for the win over #20 Lincoln Land.

PC took a 32-27 lead into the break as Lauren Taylor scored 13 of her game high 15 points in the opening stanza.  The Cobras used a 16-5 run to start the second half limiting the Loggers to just two made field goals in the opening 10 minutes.  Amanda Boyd and Brittany Burgess each scored six consecutive points to cap a late surge to seal the win.   PC shot 44% from the field while holding LLCC to just 33% from the field. PC also dominated the glass winning the battle of the boards 39-29.  Taylor was the only PC player in double figures with 15 while Hannah Ohl, Ana Deters, and Boyd each scored 8.  The win moves PC to (16-2 2-0) while Lincoln Land drops to (9-7 0-1).  Parkland's Cobras travel to Quincy on Saturday to face John Wood CC.
