Cobras Split First Two Games Of Western Trip

December 30th, 2010

The Parkland women's basketball team traveled west for the Christmas break to test their skills against some of the best junior colleges in the nation in the Country Financial Classic in Tucson, Arizona.

#5 ranked Parkland found the going rough in their first game against the hosts Pima Community College, losing 72-61.  Pima, ranked 14th in the latest NJCAA poll, took a 33-21 due to Parkland's cold shooting.  The Cobras were 10-31 (32%) in the first half but were able to stay close in the game with solid defense, holding Pima to 35% shooting before the halftime buzzer.  The Pima lead grew to 18 points early in the second half before PC got back on track and cut the deficit down to 55-45 with 8:30 remaining in the game.  PC then turned the ball over on their next 4 consecutive possessions, and the Aztecs were able to keep PC at bay for the remainder of the game.  On a positive note, PC shot 53% in the 2nd half and also out-rebounded Pima 45-39 for the game.

Traci Osby was the only player in double figures for the Cobras, as she tallied 11 points and pulled down 5 rebounds.  Lauren Taylor added 9 points and 5 boards, and Ana Deters and Brittney Burgess each had 8 points.  Hannah Ohl dished out 8 assists.

On Wednesday, Parkland took on another Arizona team, Chandler Gilbert, and thumped them by a score of 76-43.  PC darted out to a 12-0 lead and never looked back, taking a 31-12 halftime lead.  Parkland played stellar defense and controlled the boards, holding CG to 23% shooting on the night and out-rebounding them 71-41.

Nichole Schabbing led PC with 13 points and 8 rebounds, and Osby scored 11 points and pulled down 8 boards.  Ohl just missed a double double, pulling down 10 rebounds and scoring 9 points.  Jeni Free also added 8 points and 9 rebounds.

PC, now 12-2 on the season, will take on Central Arizona at 12:00 pm today (Thursday) in their final contest of the tourney.

Pitching Coach Departs Cobras

December 28th, 2010

Parkland College pitching coach, DJ Throneburg, has accepted the same position at Butler University, effective at the start of the new year. Throneburg, was in his fourth year over-seeing the Cobra pitching staff, helping guide them to two trips to the NJCAA World Series, including the National title in 2009.

The graduate of Casey-Westfield HS, pitched for Parkland from 2002-2005, making trips to the World Series in 2003 and 2005, after sitting out the 2004 season following Tommy John surgery.  After graduating from Parkland, he pitched for two years at Charleston Southern University, an NCAA D-1 in South Carolina, before returning to head the Cobra pitching staff under both former coach Mitch Rosenthal and current head coach Matt Kennedy.

First year assistant Evan DePotter, who joined the staff this fall, will take over the pitching coach duties this spring. The Butler University graduate was a four-year letter winner for the Bulldogs and was a co-captain his senior year.  It is uncertain at this time if Coach Kennedy will add another coach to the staff for the Spring 2011 season.

PC Women Dominate LLCC

December 6th, 2010

For the first month of the season, the Lake Land Women's Basketball team was perfect winning their first seven games, six over Region 24 foes. On Saturday, Parkland made sure the Lakers would not make it a clean sweep as the Cobras knocked off the Lakers 76-66 on Saturday afternoon in Mattoon.   The Cobras came ready to play as they raced out to a 9-0 lead. Lake Land would cut the margin to two before a late surge gave PC a six-point lead at the break.  Just five minutes into the second stanza, Lake Land tied it at 39, but a Nichole Schabbing lay-up and a three by Lauren Taylor put the lead back at five and the Cobras never looked back.   PC took control of the glass scoring their next 10 points in the paint to build their lead to 57-47 and took their biggest lead at 14 with just under 4 minutes remaining.   PC dominated Lake Land on the boards winning 48-31 and were nearly perfect at the free throw line making (29-33) 88%.   Ana Deters led a balanced attack with 18 points while Hannah Ohl had 14, Kristyne Smyth 11, and Lauren Taylor 10.  Parkland (7-1) returns to action on Wednesday night when they travel to Decatur to take on the Millikin JV. PC will return home for a pair of games this weekend. Lake Land drops to (7-1) with their first loss of the season.

Will CobraSports Reach 10,000 Hits in First Year?

December 3rd, 2010

Thanks for visiting this web site today.  We truly appreciate the support and encouragement of our patrons and friends.  As we approach the end of this semester and our first year of operations, we also approach the 10,000 mark for hits on this site.  Given the minimal external publicity we've had, this isn't too shabby.  Will you be the person who puts us over the top?  Tell your friends about us, and check back as often as you can for all the scores, updates, and games that make Parkland athletics fun.  Will we make 10,000 before January 6th?  That is -- as always --  up to you.  Again thanks for all you've done to support us this year, and stay tuned for some significant announcements about our plans for 2011!
