Baseball Players Announce Plans

November 13th, 2010

A pair of redshirt freshman Parkland College baseball players have finalized their college choices for the 2011-12 school year. Jordan Parr will join older brother Josh and twin Justin at the University of Illinois while Jon Carlson will head south to play at High Point University in North Carolina.

Parr, who sat out last year at Illinois State before transferring to Parkland this fall, follows in the footsteps of twin brother Justin, who played for the Cobras last season before heading across town to play for the Illini this year. Older brother Josh is a two year starter for Illinois as a middle infielder.  Jordan, a 6'3 195 right-handed hitter, is expected to see time as both an infielder and outfielder for the Cobras this season and should make an immediate impact for Illinois in 2011-12.

Carlson, who redshirted at Kentucky last year, is a 6'4" left-handed pitcher who will be one of the Cobras top hurlers this season. The Rolling Meadows graduate fires a fast ball in the 86-88 miles per hour range to go along with an outstanding change-up.  In high school, Carlson went 7-2 with a 2.01 ERA his senior season, striking out 124 in just 73 innings of work. He follows in the footsteps of former Cobra, Nate Roberts, who was the MVP at High Point last season earing All Big-South Conference honors and was selected in the Major League Baseball draft by the Minnesota Twins.

Parkland Downs Kaskaskia, 80-65

November 12th, 2010

Did you know that the Parkland Cobras got their nickname from the popular sports car of the 60's and not from the snake?  It's true.  But if the Parkland Cobras emulated a car, it wouldn't have been a Shelby Cobra in their Friday night home opener.  Fortunately, Kaskaskia was playing more like a 1958 Nash Rambler, which made them "easy pickin's" for the gold and green.  Brittney Burgess scored 13 of her game high 15 points in the second half and Carly Norton scored 9 points after the break to lead the Parkland Women's Basketball team to the 80-65 win over Kaskaskia.  The freshmen helped PC extend a 10 point lead out to 20 at 69-49 with just under 8 minutes remaining and the Blue Angels were unable to mount a rally.

Parkland won the game with outstanding shooting as the Cobras made 54% from the field including 7-11 from behind the arc. The Cobras also won  the battle of the boards out-rebounding the Blue Angels 50-35.  Kaskaskia could only muster 32% shooting despite forcing 32 PC turnovers, 17 of them in the first half.

Burgess led the way with 15 points and 8 boards while Hannah Ohl added 11 and Lauren Taylor 10.  Ana Deters scored 9 points and pulled down 7 rebounds, Amanda Boyd added 6 points and 7 rebounds, while Traci Osby scored 8 times and had 5 boards. We'Nisha Mack and Ciara Moore led KCC with 12 points apiece.

PC (4-1) will be off until November 21 when they host the Elmhurst College JV.  Whether you consider this game to have been a "sports car" of a game or a "mini-van," Steve Brown and Brian Schutte have the call for you...enjoy!
