Cobras Fight the Breeze to Pick Up Win

April 29th, 2010

On a day with winds howling at 25-35 mph and gusting over 40, the Cobra Baseball team rallied for a 14-4 win over rival Danville Area CC on Thursday afternoon at Parkland. The Cobras fell behind 3-0 and 4-1 at the start but used a six run 4th to take control of the contest.

Despite missing a pair of starters due to illness and injury, the Cobras strung together 15 hits and 10 walks to put up 14 runs in their final five at bats. Justin Parr led the way with 3 hits and scored twice while Dylan Drury drove in three and TJ McManus, Tyler Watts, Bryce Feller, and Brandon Stevens each drove in a pair.

Cobra Baseball Slugs Their Way to Victory

April 27th, 2010

Behind a power surge from the offense and another strong pitching performance from Taylor Biggs, Parkland cruised to a 10-2 victory over the Fury of Florissant Valley.

Dylan Drury, Kevin Kiermaier, and Clayon Meyer all hit home runs to help the Parkland College Baseball team end a four game losing streak with the win over St. Louis Florissant Valley. Drury's three home run in the fourth, his 5th of the season, put the Cobras up 3-0.  Meyer and Kiermaier went back to back in the fifth, it was Kiermaier's 10th of the year while it was Meyer's 1st.

PC scored in each of the last five innings as the Cobras pounded out 15 hits, 8 of which went for extra bases. Meyer led the attack with 3 hits and 2 runs scored while Kiermaier, Drury, Justin Parr, and Dan Plecki all had two hits apiece. Taylor Biggs (4-0) earned the win going five solid innings allowing just one run. Ricky Neuman (3 IP 0 ER 3 H) and Drake Everson (1 IP O H 1 K) worked the final four innings giving up just one unearned run.

Golfers in Strong Showing

April 26th, 2010

Sophomore Sam Wells wrapped up his best tournament as a collegian firing a two-day total of 145 to win the Car-X Parkland Golf Invitational by six strokes over teammate Bryan Ideus. Weather conditions could not have been more different for the two rounds as Wells shot a 72 on Sunday on a rain soaked course while his 73 today was shot in sunny but cool and windy conditions. Ideus also was the mark of consistency as he moved up the leader board with a (151  76-75).  Corbin Sebens was the only other PC player in the 70's as he shot a 76 today.

Rend Lake easily won the team title with three players all shooting 154. Rock Valley edged out the Cobras by two shots for second place.  The tournament was the final tune-up for the Cobras as they will travel south to Lock Haven CC on Sunday and Monday for the 54 hole Region 24 Tournament. The top two teams and the next five best individuals will advance to the NJCAA Nationals in Phoenix, Arizona.

Tough Day For PC Baseball

April 26th, 2010

The Parkland Baseball team saw their losing streak hit four games this afternoon as the Cobras were swept by Heartland 11-8 and 9-8.  The games were not originally scheduled for Monday, and as a result they are not available as audio podcasts here on CobraSportsNet.   We regret the omission.

As in all four of the defeats, a mixture of lack of timely hitting, shaky defense, and too many walks by Cobra hurlers led to the teams downfall.

In the night cap, PC jumped out to a 5-2 lead as Tyler Watts and Kevin Kiermaier both homered and Ryan Wides had a two run single.  Heartland tied the game at 6 before TJ McManus's two run home run put PC ahead 8-6 after 4. The game would remain tied until the seventh when with one out, Eric Aguilera doubled, Tony Sanchez reached on an error and after a strikeout, Zac Johnson hit a three run home run that went off the glove of a leaping Tyler Watts to give the Hawks the lead for good. PC had several chances to put the game away but stranded 10 runners in the contest.

The opener was a pitchers duel until the 5th when the Hawks took advantage of a misplayed fly ball to score two runs and two batters later, Matt Igara made it 7-1 with a grand slam. Kevin Kiermaier's homer cut the lead to 7-2 but HCC answered right back with four more runs to take a nine run lead into the sixth. PC wouldn't quit scoring six times in the 6th with 3 coming on a TJ McManus home run. The Cobras actually had the tying run up in the inning but grounded out to end the uprising. The Cobras threatened again in the 7th getting two runners on with just one out but a pop out to the catcher and a called strike three ended the game.

Parkland (32-7 15-5) falls into second place a game behind Heartland (26-9 16-4) with the losses. The Cobras will host Flo. Valley in a non-conference game on Tuesday.

Softball: Cobras Swat SCI

April 21st, 2010

The Parkland Cobras used the big inning on Tuesday as they swept Springfield College of Illinois 15-1 and 9-2. The wins improve the #13 Cobras to (37-13 24-2) with only 10 softball games remaining on the schedule.

The Cobras broke on top in the 3rd on an RBI single by Jenna Lehr and a two-run homer off the bat of Sam Inman. Lehr's two-run single made it 5-0 in the 4th and PC tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth to take a 7-0 lead into their last at bat. In that inning, the Cobras chased across 8 runs with seven different players driving in runs including two by Sarah Gray. Gray had three hits, scored twice, and drove in a pair.  Rachel Perez also added 4 hits and 3 RBI. Other hitting stars in the game included both Lehr and Inman who both had 2 hits and drove in three runs, as well as Kember Galloway and Sarah Frerichs who each had a pair of hits and scored twice. Jenna Harshbarger (14-3) tossed a three-hitter allowing just one run while striking out six.

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the 3rd inning of game two, Parkland struck for three runs in the third and four more in the 4th to take control of the contest. Winning pitcher Megan Jones (11-6) helped her own cause with a two-run double and Danielle Abbott added a run scoring single. Sarah Gray and Jenna Lehr each had RBI in the 4th and two more runs scored on a Bulldog error.  Gray, who went 3-4, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBI and Aubrey Welch (3-4 with 2 runs scored) paced the offense along with Jones who had 2 hits and 2 RBI. She allowed two runs and struck out four in earning the win.

Parkland's softball Cobras will take some much deserved time off before taking on Illinois Central College at 3:00 p.m. Friday in Washington, Illinois.
