Latham’s Three Stuns John Wood

February 25th, 2017

Marcus Latham hit an off-balance three with just over a second to go Saturday, to help the Parkland Men’s Basketball team steal a 71-70 victory at John Wood on Saturday in Quincy.  The win earns the Cobras their third consecutive M-WAC title and clinches them the #1 seed in the Region 24 Tournament in March.  The Cobras have won 17 straight games and have two regular season contests remaining.

John Wood led the game 36-34 at the half as they hit 5-8 shots from behind the arc to grab the lead just before intermission. The contest was a back and forth affair throughout as there were 15 lead changes and 14 ties. Parkland’s Terrion Howard would hit a pair of free throws after a technical on Wood’s Gabe McKenzie to tie the contest but Wood would regain the lead at 68-66 on two Danilo Ranger free throws with 24.8 left. PC would tie the contest again as Latham his two free throws of his own with 18.5 remaining but PC would foul again and McKenzie hit both of his shots to give the Blazers the lead.  After a time out, PC pushed the ball down court and Latham knocked down the shot from near the top of the arc to send the Cobras on to victory.

Latham came off the bench to lead a trio of players with 14 points.  He was joined by Terrion Howard and Courtez Dixon as the three accounted for 42 of Parklands’s 71 points on the afternoon.   Larry Plummer had 18 points to lead John Wood while McKenzie added 14 and Ranger 12.   The Cobras were outshot 48.1% to 40.0% and were out rebounded 39-30. They won the game by making 11-12 free throws and committing just 7 turnovers compared to 15 for John Wood.

Parkland improves to (23-3 8-0) with the win and will wrap up the home portion of their season on Wednesday night when they host Danville Area (13-11 3-5).  John Wood drops to (16-11 4-4) with the loss.
