Parkland Bounces Back With Game Two Win Over Hawks

May 2nd, 2015
Game 2:  Parkland 5  Heartland 1
Pennington went the distance scattering eight hits and allowing just one run over 7 innings.  It was the Cobras turn to take advantage of defensive miscues as four of the Cobras five runs were unearned. PC got on the board in the 3rd scoring on a wild pitch and added a run again in the 4th as Xavier Warren stole third and came on an errant throw by the catcher. Up 2-1, PC scored three times in the 5th as Glenn Reeves drove in a run and the other two runs came home on a bases loaded walk and another wild pitch. Pennington blanked the Hawks over the final two innings to earn his 6th win of the year. The win improves the Cobras to (31-17 15-11) while Heartland is (39-10 21-5).

In the first match on Saturday, PC defeated a much improved Mott team from Michigan. Mott had notched a couple of upset wins on day one so the Cobras had to fight hard to sweep them 3-0 by the scores of 25-18, 25-20, and 25-20. Lori VanBeek continued her strong offensive play leading the Cobras with 11 kills with Elise Dahlke and Teigan Flaws contributing 6 each. Parkland Volleyball team ranked #1 in the NJCAA Pre-Season Poll

August 26th, 2014
The Parkland College Volleyball team will open the 2014 season with the #1 ranking in the NJCAA D-2 Volleyball Poll after it was released today. The Cobras, who finished 2nd in 2013, open their season this Friday and Saturday at the South Suburban Classic in the Wisconsin Dells. PC will face Carl Sandburg and #12 Kansas City KS Community College on Friday before facing off against a pair of Michigan schools, Mott and #13 Muskegon on Saturday.
As always, the Cobras will be tested early as they face nine other teams ranked in the top 20 during the first three weeks of the season. After seeing two ranked squads in Wisconsin, PC will play three of six matches at the Owens Invitational against ranked foes (#6 Oakland, #10 Grand Rapids, and #18 Catawba Valley). The Kirkwood Invitational, a week later, is loaded with talent as PC will take on defending National Champion and #2 Cowley, #3 Johnson County, #5 Central Nebraska, and #7 Iowa Central.
Parkland is scheduled to go up against 13 of the top 20 teams at some point in time during the upcoming season. The Cobras will play their first three tournaments and 14 matches on the road before playing for the first time at home on September 10 against M-WAC rival Lewis and Clark.

Cobras Use Second Half Surge to Better Illinois Wesleyan

February 18th, 2014
The Parkland Men's Basketball team broke out of a month-long shooting slump on Tuesday night as they shot a torrid 61% in the second half to beat the Illinois Wesleyan JV 80-69. PC made 17-28 shots after the break including 4-5 from behind the arc and hit 11-13 free throws to pull away for the win.
The game started slowly for the Cobras as they fell behind 11-2 as the Titans hit three straight 3's to start the contest. PC would chip away at the lead and found themselves trailing by just three at 34-31 at the break. The second half started much better for Parkland as they used a 10-2 run to start the half as Ian Randolph connected for seven straight points. PC would push the lead to 63-53 but back to back 3's drew the Titans back within 4 with 8:01 to go.
After IWU closed to within three, Beau Swinford hit a big three-pointer and the lead grew to 70-62 before another Titan run cut the lead to 70-69 with 2:57 remaining. From there it would be all Cobras as they scored the final 10 points of the game as Shane Senior scored 7 of the final 10 PC points.
Senior lead a balanced Cobra attack with 16 points while Randolph added 10.  Lance Magee had a solid over-all game with 9 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals and Nate Tidwell just missed a double-double with 8 points and 9 boards. The Cobra bench was the deciding factor in the contest as they out scored the Wesleyan bench 34-0.  Caprice Salinas had 9, Dom Bolden 8, and Torian Pearson 7 off the bench, while Kevin Phillips added 6 and Washawn Watson had 4 points and 6 rebounds.
Parkland improves to (16-10) with the win and will host M-WAC rival Illinois Central College on Saturday at 4:00.

Cobras Take Game One From DACC, 6-3

April 7th, 2012

The Parkland College Softball team got off to quick starts in game one on Saturday as they picked up a win over rival Danville Area College beating the Jaguars. With the victory in hand, the Cobras improve to (22-12 11-3) on the year while DACC drops to (14-10 7-5).

Parkland jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one, as Dayna McNutt delivered an RBI double and Elizabeth Sprague and Tana Rentschler both followed with singles. The Cobras took a 3-0 lead into the 4th before pesky lead off hitter Lynzie Fields tied it with a bases loaded double. The game remained that way until the 5th when the Cobras got a one out walk and a two out single by Sprague. That brought up Rentschler who crushed a three run home run to put the Cobras back on top.  From there, Cobra starter and winner Taylor Hull kept the Jaguars off the board in the final two innings to earn the win.

The Cobras will take a few days off before returning to action with eight games in four days starting on Thursday April 12 when they host Lincoln College starting at 2:00 p.m.

Cobras Blank Spoon River In Blowout

April 6th, 2012

The Parkland Cobras continued their M-Wac schedule as Spoon River came to Champaign to play two.  Clay Manering and Mark Hode combined to shutout the Mudcats on just two hits as PC made quick work of the visitors in the first contest, ending in a 15-0 final.  Manering improve to (3-2) allowing just a bad hop single in four innings of work. The sophomore lefty walked two and struck out seven. Hode worked the final inning allowing a hit and striking out a pair. Offensively, PC used a 12 hit attack to score 15 times with seven coming in the 2nd and five more scoring in the 4th.  Joe Trennepohl got things started with a two-run 1st inning single. Bobby Burns had the big hit with a bases clearing triple in the 2nd, and pinch hitter Brad Wheeler drove home two with a double in the fourth.  Burns, Trennepohl, Jeff Limbaugh, and Joel Stucker all had two hits in the win.  Trennepohl also added 4 RBI while Burns plated three.

CobraSportsNet Tops 50,000 Visitors, Thank You!

March 20th, 2012

In a little more than two years since this project went public (January 6, 2010), the number of visitors to this web site has continued to grow.  That "hit" counter makes us a little more humble and grateful every day, as we well know that our successes are dependent on the support of the athletes,  their families, our staff, the Cobra fans, and our colleagues and supporters within and outside Parkland College.  Our goal is to grow and develop this project to embrace more coverage, an expanded use of digital communication technology, and to continue the development of our innovative progam for training sports broadcasters.  Again, CobraSportsNet says, Thank You!

Cobras Baseball Action Heating Up

March 20th, 2012

The Parkland College Baseball team took advantage of strong pitching, timely hitting, and an improving defense to take the final three games at the Ripken Classic in South Carolina. After losing the first two games of the trip, PC won the final four games to inch the Cobras (7-8) closer to the .500 mark with M-WAC play set to begin this weekend.

PC knocked off North Central Missouri 6-2, courtesy of a four-run 7th inning.  Tied at 2 going to the 7th, Wes Minton got the rally going with a one-out single. He would score the go-ahead run on a Jeff Limbaugh single and Limbaugh raced home on an RBI single by Bobby Burns.  Landon Weitekamp drove in the final two runs with a triple. Burns led the offense going 3-4 while Kieston Green also added two hits. Reliever Josh Witt (1-0) earned the win pitching a scoreless final two innings in relief of Zach Hall who allowed just one earned run in five innings of work.

PC followed up that victory with a hard fought 4-2 win over Mercer CC of New Jersey. Brian Krolikowski (1-1) picked up the win  scattering eight hits in 5.1 innings of pitching. Logan Shaftner worked the final 1.2 innings to earn the save. Offensively the Cobras used a balanced attack with seven starters getting a hit. PC grabbed an early 2-0 lead as Joey Migliaccio delivered an RBI double and Jake Pewitt came through with an RBI single of his own. After Mercer tied in their half of the third, PC would answer right back with two more runs. Jeff Limbaugh opened the inning with a single and Burns followed with a double to put runners at 2nd and 3rd.  Migliaccio put the Cobras ahead for good with a run scoring single and Weitekamp's sacrifice fly scored the final run.

The Cobras closed out the trip with a 9-0 shutout of Garrett CC of Maryland. Brett Haan (1-1) dominated the Garrett hitters tossing a hitless five innings before exiting the game due to a high pitch count. Dylan Reid worked his way out of a self made jam in the 6th and Mark Hode finished the game by pitching a perfect 7th to secure the win. The Cobras scored early and often tacking on a run in the first, two more in the second, and blowing the game wide open with a five run third.

Tom Hooker was the Cobra hitting star going 3-4 with 4 runs batted in on the day and Bobby Burns continued his strong play at the plate going 3-3 with a pair of runs scored.  PC took the early lead as Kieston Greene doubled and scored on a Minton single.  Burns and Adam Casson both singled in the second and scored on a two-run single off the bat of Hooker. In the five run third, Joey Migliaccio drove in a pair, two more came home on a Joe Trennepohl single, and he scored on Hooker's RBI single.  Hooker drove home Alex Smith in the 5th for the Cobras final run of the game.

The Cobras will begin M-WAC play this Saturday and Sunday with a pair of double headers against Illinois Central College.  PC will travel to East Peoria on Saturday before hosting the Cougars on Sunday. Like PC, ICC has played an extremely difficult early season schedule and find themselves (4-14) ahead of a Wednesday doubleheader with Mineral Area.

Cobras Fall In Thriller At Region 24 Championship

March 11th, 2012

Region 24 Player of the Year TeNale Roland hit an 8 footer from the right side with 0.4 seconds left to give Rend Lake College a wild  73-71 win over Parkland College, ending the Cobras bid for a second straight trip to Nationals. PC, which only lead in the first minute of the game, had tied the contest with 6.5 seconds left on Shaq Lowery's three pointer. The Cobras actually had a chance to win it  after Nale's game winner but Lowery's half court heave glanced off the backboard and the front of the rim as time expired.

Unfortunately for PC, the tone was set in the first half as the Warriors raced out to 17-6 lead and led by as many as 14 at 31-17.  The Cobras were ice cold, making just 2-17 shots from behind the arc in the opening 20 minutes. As they have done often this season, the Cobras clawed back and trailed by just six, 34-28 at intermission. In the second half the duo of Roland 21 points (18 in the second half) and Noel Allen 22 points kept the lead in the 5-10 point range before the Cobras rallied.  PC was able to hang close behind a balanced attack with four players reaching double figures. Shaq Lowery had a team high 16 points, 11 after the break while Mark Gilchrese had 15 points with 12 coming in the second half. The Cobras also got solid play from Cody McCollum who had 12 points and 7 rebounds and Geordy Mulumba who came off the bench to add 11 points and grab 9 boards.

Poor shooting and the inability to convert offensive rebounds ended up being the Cobras downfall on Sunday afternoon. PC shot an paltry 8-32 (25%) from three-point range and despite 16 offensive rebounds, were unable to convert them into easy points. Rend Lake won the battle of the glass 41-40 with Dominque Bolden hauling down 14 for the winning Warriors.  The game was a well played contest with PC committing just 5 turnovers on the afternoon to 10 for Rend Lake and both teams shot well from the line.

Trouble Connecting To Our LIVE Programming? Here Are Some Tips To Help

March 1st, 2012

Recently, we've been made aware that some of our audience may be having difficulties connecting to our LIVE streaming broadcasts of Parkland sports.  Well, that will never do.  So here are some hints and info to help.

First, the usual way to access the live stream is to click the "go green" link in the links column shown in the right-hand margin of this page.  But in order to do that, you first have to get to this page, and sometimes that is the problem.  When you see a message such as "Podbean is experiencing heavy traffic, please try again later,"  it means that the web page servers are being asked to do more work than they are capable of doing OR that Podbean is doing system maintence.  In this case, you'll need another route to our audio play-by-play stream.  Fortunately, there is another route.

You might wish to copy or paste this link:

Is there an easier way?  Sure. Right now, you can access the "go green" link.  Once the player opens (you'll hear either live or recorded programming) bookmark the URL.  All browsers have this bookmarking function.  Once you have this URL recorded in your browser bookmarks, you'll be good to go; just go to the bookmark and open it as you would any other.

Why this works: Podbean is the company that hosts the main web site for CobraSportsNet (you're reading it now).  But it is another company, called Shoutcast that actually supplies our audio to the Internet.  If Podbean is giving you the "busy signal" and you follow the steps shown above, you are sidestepping the busy server and cutting out the "middleman."  You're then going directly to the audio stream.

A final option:  Although we are going to leave this posting on our home page for your future reference, there is still another option.  You can just go to the home page and do a search for Cobra Sports.  Our station should appear as a search result; click it, and you're once again good to go.

And did you know that there are free aps for smart phones that will also give you access to Shoutcast?  Search your ap store for details.

One final thought: there is a finite number of listener "slots" available on CobraSportsNet.   Though we typically don't reach this limit, it can happen.  This means tuning in a little bit early isn't a bad idea.  Once you're in, you're in.  We have to set it up this way to control costs.

Don't miss any of the action here at CobraSportsNet.   Thanks for supporting us with your site visits, comments, and friendship.  GO COBRAS!
