Parkland Women Hold On To Big Win Over ICC

February 14th, 2018

The #25 Parkland Women’s Basketball  shot 82% from the line and had four players finish with between 14 and 16 points, as the Cobras defeated #10 Illinois Central 74-68 in a Region 24 showdown.  The victory moves the Cobras to (18-5 and 5-2 in the Region) while ICC drops to (19-7 and 3-3). With just two weeks to go in the regular season, the Cobras now stand 2nd in the 8 team field.

Parkland jumped out to an early 20-10 lead on Wednesday as the Cobras were a perfect 10-10 at the line in the quarter. The Cougars however finished the quarter on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to two after the opening 10 minutes. PC still led 32-28 with 4:04 until halftime but ICC went on a 8-2 run to end the quarter and led 36-34 at the break.

The third quarter saw the teams trade buckets before the Cougars took their biggest lead of the game at 51-46 with 2:35 remaining in the 3rd quarter. This time it was the Cobras turn to finish a quarter strong as they cut the margin to one at 53-52 with 10 to play. The Cobras led 58-57 with 7:03 to go and went on an 8-0 run to push the lead to 66-57 with 4:07  remaining. ICC would crawl back to within three at 69-66 with 1:08 to go but  Michah Tapscot and Crystal Mathis each made a pair of free throws  to extend the lead back to 73-66 and the Cobras held on for the victory.

Balance was the key for PC as Tapscott led the way with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Ryan Dooley had 15 points and 6 boards while Madelyn Brouwer made 6 of 9 shots and finished with 15 points as well. Mathis also was in double figures with 14 points and Heather DeLuca just missed joining them as she ended the game with 9 points and 5 assists.  Parkland shot 47% for the game and made 23-28 free throws including a perfect 8-8 by Dooley. ICC was led by Madison Faulkner with 14 points and Bailey Larsen with 12. The Cougars shot just 39% from the field and made just 30% of their shots in the second half.

The road doesn’t get any easier for Parkland as they travel to Lincoln on Saturday to take on the #15 Lynx (22-2). Lincoln pounded the Cobras by 24 points earlier this season.  PC has won five straight since that defeat while the Lynx are coming off only their 2nd defeat of the season last Saturday at John Wood. The two teams are tied for the M-WAC lead at 4-1 with 5 games to play.

#8 DACC Holds On To Win over #6 Parkland

February 7th, 2018

The Parkland Men’s Basketball team had three shots at a win in the final seconds Wednesday, but could not get the shot to go down, as they lost to rival Danville 67-66 in Champaign.  The Cobras trailed 67-63 with less than a minute to go but Quin Nottingham was fouled on a three-point attempt with 39.1 remaining. The Centennial grad sank all three shots to cut the Jaguar lead to one and after a DACC missed shot, PC had the ball with a chance to win but for the second straight game lost by a single tally.

Nottingham led the Cobras with 17 points off the bench while Isaiah Curry had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Devonte Daniels also had 11 in the loss.  Jordan Gary led DACC with 16 points while Antoine Devine added 14 and Lavelle Smith added 11.  The Jaguars shot 49% for the game to just 38% for PC. The Cobras controlled the boards 39-28 and were able to stay close due to DACC making just 11 of 22 free throws.

Danville improves to (19-3 4-0) with the win while the Cobras drop to (16-4 2-2). PC will return to action on Saturday night with a 7:30 game at Rend Lake.
