Cobras Battle Through Semi-Final and Earn Birth in Region 24 Championship

October 27th, 2017

The Parkland College Men’s Soccer team outlasted visiting Lewis and Clark 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon to advance into the Region 24 finals. The Cobras (14-4) will take on the winner of tonight’s Illinois Central versus Lincoln game scheduled for 6:00 in East Peoria. If ICC wins, Parkland will travel to ICC for a 12:00 match on Saturday afternoon. If Lincoln wins, Parkland will host the Lynx on Saturday.

With the field extremely wet after the rains of the last three days, both teams struggled early on with their traction but it would be the Cobras who would strike first as Jesus Reina found the back of the net off a perfect pass from Zach Gowlett midway thru the first half.  Just over a minute later, PC committed a foul in the box and the Blazers were awarded a penalty kick.  L&C’s Rhys Saunders buried his kick into the bottom left corner to tie the match with 23 minutes left on the clock. Neither team could convert for the remainder of the half and the score remained 1-1 headed into the break.

Chances were few early in the second half until Chen Levine got around a defender and snuck the ball just past the Lewis and Clark keeper to give PC the lead again with 31:25 remaining. Parkland would control the action for much of the final 30 minutes as Lewis and Clark could not break free. PC finished the afternoon with twelve shots on goal to just four for the visitors.  Lewis and Clark ends their season at (11-5-1) suffering two 2-1 defeats at the hands of the Cobras. The loss also ended the Hall of Fame career of long time Lewis and Clark Men’s and Women’s Coach Tim Rooney who is retiring at the end of this season. Rooney ends his Men’s career after 31 years and a record of 409-225-34. His Women’s team is still alive however and will host ICC at 2:00 on Thursday. A win would put them in the Region 24 title game against the winner of tomorrow’s SWIC and Parkland match.  Rooney, who started the Blazer Women’s program in 1993, has a record of 419-100-22 over the last 24 seasons.  His combined record for the two teams is an impressive 828-325-56.

Pugh Give Cobras Late Push over ICC

October 9th, 2017

Johnny Pugh scored twice in the final minutes to help the Parkland Men’s Soccer team to an unlikely 3-2 rally over Illinois Central College. The win, along with Lincoln College’s loss to Heartland, earns the Cobras a 3rd straight Midwest Athletic Conference title.

Playing in windy and wet conditions, the Cobras appeared destined to lose as they trailed 2-0 with just under 8 minutes remaining before Pugh got the Cobras on the board as he drilled a free kick into the back of the net with 7:31 left.  Chen Levien would tie the match just three minutes later as he picked up a loose ball in front of the Cougars net and got the ball by the keeper for a 2-2 tie. Just 26 seconds later, Pugh would take a feed from Henrique Santiago and pick up the game winner as his shot eluded the ICC goal keeper. The Cobras were able to hold on over the final four minutes that saw some rough play which resulted in a player being ejected from both teams.

The win moves Parkland to (11-3 6-1) with a game tentatively scheduled against the UI Club Team this Wednesday.  Illinois Central drops to (7-7 and 4-3).  The Cobras have three matches left in the regular season including two big Region 24 matches at Heartland on October 14 and Southwestern Illinois on October 17.

Cobras Cruise in Second Half as they Take down Cougars

October 9th, 2017

The Parkland Women’s Soccer team outlasted both Illinois Central and extremely windy conditions Saturday as they blanked the Cougars 5-0 in Region 24 play. The win moves PC to (6-5-1 2-1) while ICC falls to (6-7 1-3).

The Cobras spent the first half playing into a fierce 20-25 miles per hour wind with occasional gusts over 30 and found the ability to get off a shot very difficult. In fact ICC had 5 shots to just one for the Cobras until the final five minutes when the Cobra offense came alive.  Beatriz Pinheiro worked her way past the ICC defender off an Alexis Warren assist to score the first goal with just four minute 4:08 left until halftime. Just two minutes later PC would score against at Nomi Veldt connected off a Marissa Barria pass.

The Cobras were a confident group in the second half as they held a 2-0 lead and now had the wind at their backs. It didn’t take long as just eight minutes after the break. Breanna Merchant blasted a long free kick into the top of the net for a 3-0 lead.  Four minutes later, Pinheiro would score again with Barria picking up her second assist.  Barria would wrap up the scoring as she also sent a free kick into the back of the net at the 67 minute mark. Rachel Lee picked up the victory in goal as the Cobras recorded their fourth shutout victory of the season.

PC will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Indian Hills CC of Iowa (8-2-1) starting at 4:00.
