Parkland Pulls Away for Fifth Straight Win

Parkland shot 53% from the field and 62% from inside the arc, as they pulled away from the visiting Lindenwood JV 96-80 on Monday night in Champaign. Thirteen different players scored for the Cobras who won their 5th straight game in improving to (5-3) on the season.
The Cobras knocked down seven three's in the first half but could not pull away from the Lynx who drilled 6 of 9 from behind the arc themselves, to keep the game close, as PC led just 45-40 at the break.  In the second half, PC would build the lead up to 15 at 70-55 with 9:08 remaining but Lindenwood had one last run in them as they would outscore the Cobras 10-1 to cut the margin to 71-65 with 7:15 to go.
From there, the Cobras depth came into play as Torian Pearson would get back to back buckets to start a 10-4 run and pull away for the win. Parkland's bench outscored the Lindenwood substitutes 54-20 in the contest. PC also had 19 assists while committing just six turnovers on the night.
Four Cobras finished in double figures as Travis Hardcastle led the way with 14 points, Lance Magee added 12 points, 6 assists, and 5 rebounds, Michael Maras saw his first action of the season after battling injuries to score 11, and Nate Tidwell had a strong second half to score 10 points and grab 6 boards. Lindenwood's Kevin Lamb led all scorers with 25 points while Zach Lochhead had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Parkland will be off until December 3rd when they travel to Prairie State for a 7:00 contest.

Cobra Volleyball Ends Amazing Season as National Runner-up

Down 9-3 and 10-6 in the fifth set, No. 1 Cowley County (Kan.) stormed back to capture the NJCAA Division II Volleyball Championship over No. 2 Parkland (Ill.) tonight on the campus of Owens Community College (Ohio) 25-21, 23-25, 25-16, 21-25, 16-14.

Parkland battled and held championship point, 14-13 in the deciding fifth set, but served a ball into the net. Cowley County took advantage and won the ensuing two points, setting off a wild celebration.The title gives the Tigers two of the last three national championships - all held at OCC outside Toledo. 

BJ Specht of Cowley County was named Tournament MVP, while head coach Jennifer Bahner was named the NJCAA DII Coach of the Year for the second time in three years.

With the defeat, Parkland finishes as the National Runner-up, their highest finish since winning it all in 1999. The Cobras ended with a final record of 52-3, losing only to champion Cowley and defending champions Grand Rapids.

Congratulations to Coach Hastings, his staff, and all of the team and fans on a truly amazing season, one that will be remembered for many years to come.

Cobras to Play For National Championship!!

The Parkland Volleyball team would pick up a huge win in the National Semi-Final, defeating Johnson County CC 3-1 (25-22, 25-19, 20-25, 25-21) to secure a spot in the title game.  The Finals will put the #1 Cowley County Tigers against the #2 Cobras in a highly anticipated matchup, with the winner taking home the crown. Game time for the Championship match will be 5:30 Central time.  LETS GO PARKLAND!!!!!


Parkland Volleyball Back in Final Four!

The Parkland College Volleyball team knocked off their old nemesis, defending National Champions Grand Rapid CC Thursday night, to advance to the NJCAA D-2 Final Four for the second consecutive season. PC defeated the Raiders (3-1) winning 16-25, 25-23, 25-18, and 25-13. The victory avenged one of the Cobras two defeats this season and more importantly the heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Grand Rapids in last years semi-finals.  

Grand Rapids controlled the match early but a Cobra run midway through set 2 allowed PC to hang on for a 25-23 win to tie the match. The Cobras were never headed in set 3 and broke out of a 9-all tie in set four with eight straight points to put the match away.

Parkland (51-2) will play Johnson County, KS (30-6) at 5:30 CST in one of the semi-finals with the winner advancing to the title game. PC defeated Johnson 3-2 early in the season.

Cobra Volleyball Cruises in First Match at Nationals

The #2 Parkland Volleyball team was able to knock off the #15 seed Moraine Valley 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-20) to kick off the 2013 NJCAA DII Volleyball National Tournament.  The win puts the Cobras in a rematch with #10 Grand Rapids CC, one of the two teams to beat the Cobras this season and also the same team Parkland fell to in last years National Semi-Final.  The Cobras will take a 37 match win streak into the next round.  


Turnovers Lead to Cobras First Loss of Season

The Parkland Women's Basketball team committed 27 turnovers and committed 26 fouls as the  OLney Central Blue Knights rallied to beat the Cobras 76-73.  The loss was the first of the season after two victories for PC, while OCC evened their record at (2-2).
Parkland looked like they would blow this one open early as they raced out to a 17-4 lead after the opening eight minutes. OCC chipped away and closed the margin to just four at 31-27 at the break.  The Blue Knights would come out on fire early in the second half as they would take their first lead of the game at 36-35 with 16:29 left.  The lead would go up to three before PC regained control and actually build the lead back up to nine at 64-55 with 5:45 remaining.  OCC would score the next seven points to cut the lead to two before Erin Kelley followed up her own missed shot with a basket and free to throw to make it 69-64 with 2:56 left.
After the teams traded buckets, Kelsee Ennis drained a huge three-pointer to cut the lead to 71-69 and Brooke Callaway would tie the game just moments later following a Cobra turnover and foul.
Tied at 71, Ennis made a pair of free throws to give OCC the lead with 1:37 left but Ashley Walker's runner down the lane tied the game again with 1:25 to go. Both teams would miss shots on their next possession but OCC's Leah Myers made two free throws with 56.2 left to put OCC back on top. The Cobras had a great chance to tie but Walker missed a pair of five footers and PC would eventually turn the ball over. Olney made just one of their final four free throw attempts but the Cobras committed their fourth turnover in the final minute of the game to give OCC the win.
Kelsee Ennis led all scorers with 23 points, 20 coming in the second half. Kelsey Pilat added 13 points and 8 boards, Samantha Scott 11, and Brooke Callaway 7 points and 10 rebounds for the victorious Blue Knights. Jerica Hawkins paced PC with 17 points before fouling out late in the game. Ashley Walker added 16 while Chelsea Cross had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Nadine Vaughn also had 10 boards for PC. 
The Cobras won the battle of the boards 51-36 but lost the game at the line where OCC made 27 of 36 attempts while PC  made 9 of 13.  Next up for the Cobras is a pair of games this weekend at the Kirkwood CC Invitational.

Parkland Headed Back to Nationals

In another Cobra trademark, offensively balanced match, #2 Parkland won the District J Championship over Lewis & Clark in a three-set sweep 25-13, 25-6, 25-13.

Ally Krenz, Lori VanBeek and Elise Dahlke had 6 kills each, and Alexis Clemons, Teigan Flaws and Megan Casagrande had 5 each. Casagrande had a career high 10 blocks, and VanBeek had 6. Setters Jordan Wooden (15 assists) and Emily Wilson (12 assists) ran the offense to perfection while Kaitlyn Hunt had 12 digs to lead the back row effort.

Parkland, winners of 36 straight matches, improves to 49-2 on the season, and advances to the NJCAA National Tournament for the sixth time in a row. The national tournament will take place November 21-23 in Toledo, Ohio. Parkland will find out their seed and opponent on Tuesday.


Women’s Basketball Picks Up Exhibition Win Over UI Club

The PC Women's Basketball team raced out to a 27-6 lead and never looked back as they cruised to a 71-42 win over the UI Club in an exhibition game Thursday night. The Cobras, who went 2-0 winning the Waubonsee Invite last weekend, used the game as a tune-up for their next regular season game on November 13 when they host Olney starting at 6:00.
Jocie Klocke lead a balanced attack with 15 points on 6 of 10 shooting including 3 of 5 from behind the arc. She also handed out 7 assists and had a pair of steals. Chelsea Cross added 14 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in the winning effort.  Hanna Wascher just missed a double-double with 8 points and 10 boards, Erin Kelley tossed in 9 points and chased down 5 rebounds, while Jerica Hawkins had 8 points, making all four of her shots from the field.
PC shot 53% for the game while holding the UI Club team to just 26% shooting.  The Cobras also won the battle of the boards 41-22. 

Parkland Volleyball Starts Post Season With Straight Sets Win

The #2 nationally ranked Parkland Cobras kicked off the post-season on Wednesday night with a 3-set sweep over Danville Area CC by the scores of 25-11, 25-12, 25-16. 

A trio of Cobras led the offense (Ally Krenz, Alexis Clemons and Lori VanBeek) with 8 kills each. Megan Casagrande also had 6 kills on the evening. Casagrande also led the blocking effort with 5. The quartet of setters (Emily Wilson, Jordan Wooden, Morgan Hickman and Madison Weldon) combined for 39 assists on the evening. Defensively, Julia Sciole led the back row with 10 digs. 

The evening also celebrated the accomplishments of the eight sophomores on the team. As a group, they have amassed a record of 93-10 over the two years, and they have maintained their #2 national ranking throughout the entirety of the season. At 48-2, the Cobras travel to Rend Lake College this weekend to play Lewis & Clark for the regional championship on Saturday at 2pm. Lewis and Clark upended Lincoln College 3-2 tonight, winning 15-13 in the 5th set. The Cobras and Blazers will square off in the opening match with a trip to Nationals on the line. A victory would advance PC to Nationals in Toledo, Ohio for the 6th consecutive year. Illinois Central College and Lincoln Land will battle in the 4:00 finale for the other spot.

Parkland Extend Win Streak in Regular Season Finale

The Parkland Cobras wrapped up the final day of the Parkland Invite with a three-set sweep of South Suburban 25-18, 25-17, 25-16. Balanced offense was again the key with Megan Casagrande (8 kills), Teigan Flaws (7 kills), Lori VanBeek (6 kills) and Elise Dahlke (5 kills) leading the way. Casagrande, Flaws and VanBeek combined for 10 blocks as well.

Emily Wilson and Jordan Wooden again did a great job distributing the offense with 15 and 13 assists, respectively. Defensively, Kaitlyn Hunt had 16 digs.
The Cobras ran their winning streak to 34 matches and improved to 47-2 with the victory. They will take their #2 national ranking and top-seed in Region 24 into the start of postseason play when the Cobras host Danville on Wednesday at 6pm. With a win, the Cobras will play for the District Championship on Saturday in at at Rend Lake College in Ina, Illinois at 2pm against the winner of the Lincoln and Lewis and Clark match.

Cobras Advance to Regional Final

The Parkland Women's Soccer team came up big on Friday afternoon as they cruised past Kaskaskia 7-0 in a Region 24 Semi-Final in Champaign. The victory moves the Cobras into the Region 24 title game for the first time since 2011.
On Friday it was all Cobras as Kelsey Nystrom scored an unassisted goal in the opening two minutes to give PC the lead. Ginyce Haywood scored with an assist from Leticia Rabello to make it 2-0 and Ampara DeLeon wrapped up the first half scoring as she connected on a feed from Ali Host.
After halftime PC would retain their three goal margin until the 18 minute mark of the second half when Desirae Lozana scored with an assist to DeLeon. The Cobras would then score two more goals in a three minute burst as Marissa Espinoza found the back of the net with Kelsey Nystrom earning the save. Nystrom would score her second goal of the day just three minutes later on a pass from Amanda Stoll.  The Cobras scored their final goal with just 7 minutes left in the match as Host scored with an assist from Giovanna Zanchetta.
The win moves Parkland to (15-4) on the year as they await the winner of Friday nights match between top seed Lewis and Clark and #4 seed Southwestern Illinois. If L&C wins, PC will travel to Godfrey for a noon Sunday match up against the Blazers for the Region 24 title. IF SWIC wins, PC will host the Blue Storm at noon Sunday. Kaskaskia saw their season end with a final record of (13-4).
