Cobra Softball Sweeps DH At John Wood CC

March 29th, 2011
Behind some excellent defense and a strong pitching performances from Amy Simpson and Shelby Lust the Parkland College Cobras took both ends of a twin bill from John Wood on Sunday.  The games were played at JWCC in Quincy.
Game 1:   Parkland College  9    John Wood   1
Amy Simpson (1-1) allowed only 6 hits, walking none while allowing no earned runs in a game in which she had JWCC hitters off balance for the entire game.  The Cobras' offense was largely provided by shortstop Sarah Gray, with 2 hits, including a triple and 3 RBI for her game.  Left fielder Sarah Frerichs came on big with 3 hits, including a double and 2 RBI.  Infielders Brittany Einck and Elizabeth Sprague had 2 hits each, as did Dayna McNutt.  It was the first victory in cicle for the freshman hurler Simpson.
Game 2:  Parkland College   6    John Wood  0
Shelby Lust (2-0) shutout John Wood on a sparkling 4 hitter.  She authored 3 strike outs while giving up only a single walk on the day.  Sarah Gray once again led the offensive attack with 3 hits, including a double and 3 stolen bases.  Brittany Einck chipped in 2 hits a RBI, with Dayna McNutt, Erika Fitzgerald, Kaitlyn Winkler, and Elizabeth Sprague each getting one RBI. With the double header sweep, Parkland extends its record to 10-8 overall and 4-0  in the M-WAC conference.  They are also perfect 6-0 against teams in our region.
After a shakey Southern trip to start the season, the defending region 24 champions are rounding into form once again.
How good were the Cobras this week?  In the past week, Parkland won all six of its games, as the pitchers did an excellent job for the Cobras, limiting oponents to 19 hits, 4 runs, of which only 2 were earned.  Cobra pitching walked 7 but struck out 32.  That translates to a 0.36 era for the pitching staff, and a paltry .135 batting average for the opponents.  The Cobras successfully swiped 15 of 16 on stolen base attempts, led by Sarah Gray with eight.  During the week the Cobras turned 3 double plays. Cobra Women Top Tough Foe, Take 3rd Place In National Tournament! (updated)

March 19th, 2011

Stubborn post defense, timely shooting, high energy, and solid fundamentals all around led Parkland past Iowa Central College today at the National Tournament in East Peoria, as the Parkland College Women's Basketball team rebounded from a tough loss on Friday night and upended a very tall and talented Iowa Central team 78-68 to finish in 3rd place at the NJCAA Division II National Tournament held at Illinois Central College in East Peoria. The 3rd place finish is the Cobras' highest result ever, and their final record of 34 wins versus only three losses is also a school record for most wins in a season. The Cobras have now placed 3rd, 6th, and 4th at Nationals over the past three seasons.

Following their only tourney loss earlier, the Cobras regrouped and rallied around the word "resilient" written on the board in their locker room. They had a good practice and were clearly ready to give battle to an opponent who fell one heart-wrenching missed free throw short of appearing in the championship game themselves. The question was, who could bounce back? Saturday, the Cobras showed no ill effects of their Friday defeat at the hands of eventual champion Monroe CC, as they jumped out to a 41-32 halftime lead behind 53% shooting. The Tritons quickly erased that deficit early in the second half as the game became a tight contest with 10 ties and 19 lead changes. Parkland was finally able to regain control in the final 5 minutes and pull away for the ten point win. Down the stretch, key shots and free throws by Hannah Ohl, Ana Deters, and April Barnett turned the tide. At one point, the Cobras trailed 60-57, but outscored the Tritons 21-8 to close the game in winning style. Unlike the Monroe loss, the game with Iowa Central featured excellent Cobra free throw shooting (14 of 17) and far fewer turnovers.

As was the case all season, balance was the key for the Cobras as four players finished in double figures. All-tournament selections Hannah Ohl and April Barnett each scored 16 points to lead the way on Saturday. Ohl had a fine over-all game with 16 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals while Barnett once again came off the bench to score 16, grab 4 boards, dish out 4 assists, and pick up 4 steals. Brittney Burgess added 13 points and 6 rebounds while Ana Deters added 13 points and 5 boards. Nicole Shabbing, Jenny Free, and Amanda Boyd, along with Deters and Burgess, worked very hard and very effectively defending the post against three Iowa Central players who stood over six feet tall and who were the leading scorers for the Tritons in their preceding game versus Pima CC of Tucson.

The game was played in front of a good crowd that was mostly backers of the green and gold. There were more than a few tears of joy in the stands at the end of the evening.

CobraSportsNet says congratulations to Coach Karrie Redeker, her staff, and all the players on a truly outstanding season, one that has set the bar high for future Cobra Basketball teams!
