Kelsi and Jenna: “A Pair Of Aces”

February 28th, 2011

Here's a feature interview that we originally produced as a halftime feature for our basketball webcast.  We spent a few minutes last week with Kelsi Hoey and Jenna Harshbarger of the Parkland College softball team, and we decided to also present it to you here as a feature on the web site.

The season starts Wednesday night when the team departs for Florida to face off against some extremely formidable competition.  These two hurlers form the backbone of the pitching staff, and perhaps the team.  We think you'll quickly come to know and respect our PC "pair of aces."

February 19th, 2011

The Parkland College Men outscored Vincennes 16-6 over the final 6:07 of the game to outlast the Blazers 69-59, giving the Cobras a sweep of the season series.  PC overcame a cold shooting night from the field by making 19-24 free throws in the second half and forcing 20 VU turnovers.

The Cobras built a 14 point first half lead behind DJ Hoskins 9 points and Tiger O'Neil coming off the bench to add 9 of his own.  A late VU run made it 36-27 PC at the break and the Blazers would take advantage of a cold start in the second half by the Cobras to grab a 48-47 lead with 9:20 to go.  PC made just 2 of 15 shots to start the half, allowing VU to climb back into the contest.  But a strong defensive effort kept PC close.  The game would go back and forth until Cody McCollum made both ends of a 1-1 to give PC a 55-53 lead with 5:19 left.  A put back by D.J. Hoskins and two free throws by Brandon Hayes sandwiched around a VU bucket extended the lead to 6 and the Cobras would make 8-10 from the charity stripe down the stretch to seal the win.

Hoskins led the way for PC with 21 points while Lowery added 15 and O'Neil 11 to pace the Cobra attack. Jamel Johnson also had a big game with 8 points and 8 rebounds. Lieon Tillman led the Blazers with 15 points and 11 rebounds, Nick Wiggins added 11, and Jan Petrovcic had 9 points and 10 boards.

February 19th, 2011

The PC Women's winning streak hit 15 on Saturday as they overwhelmed the University of Illinois Club Team 72-29 on Saturday afternoon.  The Cobras raced out to the early lead behind a hot shooting performance by Lauren Taylor and Brittney Burgess who each scored 8 points in the opening half.  Balance was the key to the early run as Amanda Boyd, Ana Deters, and Nicole Schabbing each added 6 for the Cobras before intermission.

The second half was much the same as PC shot 55% for the game and out rebounded the UI Club 45-20 while holding the visitors to just 24% shooting. UI Club especially struggled from behind the arc making just 1 of 20 attempts.

Burgess led all scorers with 14 points making 7-8 shots while April Barnett came off the bench to add 13 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals.  Amanda Boyd continued her scrappy play as she had 7 points and 9 rebounds on the defensive end.  Lauren Taylor finished with 8 points and 4 assists while Schabbing scored 8 points and added 4 rebounds.

Parkland Women’s Hoopsters Approaching Title!

February 17th, 2011

The #3 Parkland Women's Basketball team showed no letdown after their huge OT win over Kankakee Monday night as they handily dispatched M-WAC foe Lincoln College 86-42 on Wednesday night. Brittney Burgess buried a three on the Cobras first possession to set the tone and PC raced out to a 25-12 lead early in the game. After the Lynx drew to within 7, Parkland closed the half on a 17-3 run to take a commanding 42-21 lead at the midway point. Ana Deters 14 points in the opening 20 minutes paced the Cobras attack.

The Cobras continued to roll in the second half using a combination of points in transition as well as the half court, and never gave Lincoln a chance to get back in the contest.  Deters finished with a team high 18 points while April Barnett and Traci Osby came off the bench to score 10 points each. Lauren Taylor and Burgess each scored 9 while Carly Norton handed out 6 assists.

PC improves to (25-2 8-0) and will host the UI Club Team at 12:00 on Saturday afternoon. That's a game you can hear LIVE here on CobraSportsNet.  Lincoln falls to (13-14 2-6) after the defeat.

PC Men Top Lincoln

February 17th, 2011

The Parkland Men's Basketball team picked up one of their most impressive wins of the year and secured their first winning season since the 2006-2007 season campaign, with an impressive 69-59 win at Lincoln College.

The Cobras, according to Lincoln Coach Kirk Whiteman "Parkland just flat out, out toughed us", won the physical contest by converting 15 free throws and using a smothering defense that held the Lynx to just 33% shooting and to almost 15 points less in the game then their season average.

Shaq Lowery turned in another fine performance with a team high 25 points, DJ Hoskins added 16 while Cody McCollum tossed in 12.   Dean Neaville continued to show his improvement adding 10 boards and blocking 5 shots.  Florida State signee Kiel Turpin led the Lynx with 21 points and 14 rebounds.

PC Men Grab Important BB Win

February 14th, 2011

The PC Men's Basketball team bounced back from a tough home loss on Wednesday night with an important 73-51 defeat of Region 24 foe Shawnee CC giving the Cobras a sweep of the season series.

Winning after the four hour bus trip to Ullin, Illinois is never easy but the Cobras jumped out early and would never look back.  PC was aggressive and active on both ends of the court forcing several first half turnovers leading to easy baskets in transition. PC led 37-19 at the break, keeping the Saints to a season low point total in a half.

The second half would be much the same as PC continued to execute their game plan and seal the win. Shaq Lowery continued his excellent play knocking down 5 three's on the way to a 24 point outburst.  DJ Hoskins made 4 three's to finish with 17 points and always steady Cody McCollum scored 10 for the winning Cobras.  Chris Price was the lone Shawnee to break into double digits with 12 points.

PC moves to (15-11 4-3) while Shawnee drops to (13-7).  PC needs just one more victory to post their first winning season since the 2006-2007 season when the Cobras finished 17-15.  Next up will be an M-WAC showdown with co-leader and defending National Champs Lincoln (18-5 5-1) at 7:30 on Wednesday night in the Lynx Gym.

Cobra Women Tangle With KCC; Win In OT!

February 13th, 2011

The #4 ranked Parkland Cobras picked up their biggest win of the season as they handed #1 Kankakee Community College loss number one on the season. It took an extra 5 minutes as the two teams were tied at 81 at the end of regulation.  Parkland received a total team effort Monday night as the Cobras shocked previously undefeated Kankakee

90-85 in overtime. After KCC sent the game to overtime with a three late in regulation, PC outscored the visitors 9-4 in the extra period to send the Cavaliers to their first loss of the season.

After rallying from an 11 point second half deficit, the Cobras rode the strong performance of Brittney Burgess to grab a 60-54 lead going to the final 10 minutes only to see the Cavs make three consecutive shots from behind the arc to give the visitors the lead once again.  The teams traded buckets the rest of regulation and it appeared PC may escape with the win but Lexi Carson's three with 30.7 second left tied the game. After Burgess had a shot spin out, KCC committed a shot clock violation with 1.9 seconds left and the Cobras regained possession only to see Hannah Ohl's three-point attempt hit off the backboard sending the game to overtime.

Both teams showed their exhaustion from the highly contested game as they struggled to make shots in the extra period until Ohl broke the drought with a bucket two minutes in.  Tied at 85, it was Kristyne Smyth's turn to come up big as the freshman hit back to back buckets to give the Cobras a lead they would never relinquish.

The key to the win for PC was a solid over-all effort from the entire team as the Cobra bench outscored the visitors 34-6. PC also hustled their way to a 51-38 advantage on the boards to offset KCC making 24-30 shots from the free throw line and making 7-16 three's in the second half.

Burgess led all scorers with 24 points, scoring 17 in the second half.  Amanda Boyd had a double double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, Hannah Ohl added 12 points, and Traci Osby tossed in 10.  All 11 PC players who saw action scored at least 3 points.  For KCC, all five starters finished in double figures with Lexi Carson pacing the attack with 20 points while Demtria Ward had a huge game scoring 17 points, pulling down 18 boards and blocking 4 shots.

The win moves PC to (24-2) and runs their winning streak to 13 games while Kankakee drops to (26-1) on the season. Click below for the entire thrilling game call with Ryan Ifft and Brian Schutte.  Wow, what a game!

Men Fall To TrailBlazers In Final Ten Minutes

February 9th, 2011

It was 57-55 at the 11:39 mark of the second half.  From there, the JWCC Blazers went on a 19-11 run, and put the feisty Cobras away.  In a game that was eerily similar to the game between the two teams earlier in the season, the John Wood Trail Blazers used a fast start and strong finish to defeat the Parkland men's basketball team 92-77.

The Trail Blazers raced out to an early 21-6 lead as the Cobras had no answer for the inside out duo of Ryan Stuckman (17 first half points) and Will Carr (8 points).  Jurgen Lico also chipped in 8 in the opening period.  PC used a strong effort from behind the arc, making 8-15 shots in the first half, and trailed 46-37 at intermission.

PC took control early in the half as JWCC got in early foul trouble sending the Cobras into the 1-1 just three minutes into the half. The Cobras knocked down 10-12 free throws and closed the margin to 51-47 despite not making a single basket from the field during that stretch. DJ Hoskins single handedly kept the Cobras in the game as he scored 24 of his game high 27 points in the second half as PC trailed by just two points at 57-55 with 11:39 remaining.

From there Lico took over scoring seven consecutive points to give the Blazers a 65-56 lead and the Cobras could never get closer than 5 the rest of the way as JW made 15-16 free throws down the stretch.  JW shot a blazing 56% for the game and converted 81% of their shots from the line. They also out rebounded PC by a 43-28 margin.

Hoskins led PC and all scorers with 27 while Cody McCollum added 13 and Shaq Lowery tossed in 12. Jamel Johnson chased down 12 boards for the Cobras. Ryan Stuckman led JWCC with 24 points, Lico added 19, and Carr had 12 for the winners.  PC drops to (14-11 4-3) with the loss while John Wood stays perfect in the M-WAC at (17-7 5-0). The Cobras travel to Shawnee on Saturday for an afternoon contest against the Saints.  Our game play-by-play account is joined in progress.

Brian Schutte and Steve Brown have the call.

Cobras Hang On for Tough Win Over JWCC

February 9th, 2011

Playing their third game in five days may have taken their toll on the #4 ranked Cobras as they struggled to a 59-52 win over John Wood, running their winning streak to 12 games.  Parkland was led by the hot shooting of Hannah Ohl, who finished with a game-high 16 points, and Amanda Boyd who also got into double figures with 12 points.  The win moves the #4 ranked Cobras to a 23-2 record on the season as they look forward to a Valentine's Day showdown with undefeated and #1 ranked Kankakee Community College.

The usually hot shooting Cobras trailed most of the first half before a late run tied the game at 27 going into the break.  Amanda Boyd's rebound bucket with 9:55 game PC the lead for good at 43-42 but PC could not shake the pesky visitors as the Cobras could never extend their lead past five points until Kristyne Smyth and Lauren Taylor made 4 consecutive free throws in the final 30 seconds to give them their final margin of victory.

Hannah Ohl and Amanda Boyd once again led the offense.  Ana Deters added 8 points and also had 8 tough boards while Brittney Burgess picked up 9 caroms in a game that could generously be termed "very physical." PC shot just 38% from the field but JWCC had even more trouble, making just 30% of their attempts.   Jessica Walker led the Blazers with 15 points and 8 boards while Ashley Coffey had a double-double scoring 10 points and picking up 12 boards.

As noted, after a much deserved weekend off, PC (23-2 7-0) will host the #1 team in the NJCAA, the undefeated Kankakee Cavaliers on Monday night, a contest you can hear live here on CobraSportsNet.  With a win on Saturday versus ICC, the Cavs will enter the contest with a perfect record of 26-0.

Parkland Men Limit Loggers

February 7th, 2011
The PC Men won their third straight game and picked up their second win over the Lincoln land Loggers with an impressive 71-60 victory. PC played well at both ends of the court limiting LLCC to just 35% shooting from the field while making 58% of their own shots in the second half and 46% for the game.  PC was especially impressive from behind the arc draining 11 of 21 attempts.
DJ Hoskins finished with a game high 19 points draining 4 of 6 three's while Shaquille Lowery added 16 points, making 6-9 free throws and knocking down 2 of 4 from three point range.  Dean Neville also came up big for PC pulling down 10 boards and blocking or altering numerous Lincoln Land shots.   Mason Alwan led the Loggers with 31 points on 10-18 shooting.
Parkland (13-10 3-2) will try to keep their streak alive tonight with a 7:30 contest at ICC (10-11 0-5). Despite having lost seven straight, the Cougars have played two of their better games of late losing in double over time to Lincoln Land and losing a tough battle at Lincoln.
